Barsbek: Village Green, Crocus Bloom and Timber Storehouses
Accommodation in Barsbek
Barsbek can be explored through three distinct features: the village green lined with old lime trees, the timber storehouses and the natural area around Lake Barsbek. Seasonal attractions such as the crocus bloom and the Probstei Grain Days are also part of the picture. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing permanent local features from seasonal experiences and events whose dates may vary.
Village Green and Spring
The village green is surrounded by more than 60 old lime trees. In spring, thousands of multicoloured crocuses bloom there, attracting visitors from near and far. The timing of the bloom varies from year to year. So if you are planning your trip specifically around this natural spectacle, allow for a changing flowering period rather than assuming a fixed date.
The annual Crocus Coffee event features homemade cake and handmade goods from the local crochet club. Dates and arrangements may change; check the latest information in advance if you want to plan your visit around it. A weekly market is another local option for food shopping. As operational details may change, check these in advance when making specific plans as well.
Timber Storehouses and Local Sights
Barsbek has three timber storehouses, considered cultural heritage dating from Slavic times. The timber storehouses belonging to the Sinjen and Wiese families can be viewed from the road. The buildings are on private property; viewing them from the road is the intended way to see them.
Another recurring sight is the straw figures beside the municipal car park on the B 502. New figures are displayed there every year during the Probstei Grain Days. The figures are therefore part of a seasonal event; if you want to see them, check the dates of the event that year.
Cycling, Nature and Practical Information
Since 2019, the municipal car park on the B 502 has had a free e-bike charging station with four charging points. Check whether it is currently operating before setting out. This lets you include a charging stop in your plans without assuming the station is guaranteed to be available.
The Barsbek Lake and Surroundings Nature Reserve can be reached by bicycle from Barsbek or from the Baltic Sea Cycle Route on the dyke. The reserve covers 146 hectares; the lake within it is about 40 hectares. The lake is therefore only part of the protected area as a whole. Lake Barsbek is a hunting ground for a pair of white-tailed eagles; their nest is between Krokau and Fiefbergen.
A short route to the Baltic Sea passes through salt meadows and over an old dyke to a bathing beach. It complements the cycling connection to the nature reserve with a different landscape: here, a route through salt meadows and over the dyke; there, bicycle access to the lake and its surroundings. The short route should not be taken to mean that it explicitly starts in Barsbek.
In the wider Plön travel destination
The wider Plön travel destination includes around 80 lakes in Plön District. These include Lake Großer Plöner See, covering 29 km², and Lake Selenter See, covering 22 km². The district lies between the Baltic Sea and Holstein Switzerland and has about 50 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline. Along the district’s coast, visitors can swim, sail, surf, dive, take boat trips, go on offshore sailing trips, take cutter trips and fish from the shore in the surf. This regional perspective complements Barsbek’s local features with the lake and coastal attractions of the explicitly named wider travel destination.
