Colvend: Coast, Walking and Golf
Accommodation in Colvend
Colvend brings together a range of interests you can weigh up when choosing a destination: coastal scenery, walking, architecture, golf and a seasonal market. When looking for a hotel, it may help to first consider which of these themes you want to shape your stay. The landscape ranges from cliffs and small coves to woodland, panoramic views of the Urr Valley and the shores of Barean Loch; Colvend Church and golf offer other interests to explore.
Coast and landscape
The Colvend Coast lies within the East Stewartry Coast National Scenic Area. Its deeply indented coastline is characterised by impressive cliffs and small coves. The coastal path between Sandyhills and Kippford offers opportunities for wildlife watching. Which animals you see will naturally vary.
Walking between woodland and viewpoints
The Dalbeattie to Colvend Trail passes through a mix of coniferous and deciduous woodland. From higher ground, there are panoramic views of the Urr Valley and the surrounding hills. The trail follows the shore of Barean Loch before descending into the village of Colvend. Dalbeattie Forest has a large population of red squirrels along this trail; sightings naturally vary.
There is a practical difference when choosing between the two routes: the Dalbeattie to Colvend Trail links woodland, elevated views and the shoreline of Barean Loch; the coastal path between Sandyhills and Kippford offers the chance to watch wildlife. This lets you choose your walking interests based on landscape or nature watching.
Architecture and golf
Colvend Church is a cruciform church dating from 1911, with a tall tower at the west gable end. Its interior features Romanesque design elements. Three stained-glass windows date from around 1925. The cruciform shape and the position of the tower describe its exterior; the Romanesque elements are inside. Together with the windows, they offer several different architectural points of interest.
Colvend Golf Club is an 18-hole parkland course on the Solway Coast, with views across the Cumbrian Fells. If you include golf in your travel plans, the course type and the views can serve as practical points of reference. The scenery also differs: cliffs and small coves define the Colvend Coast, while the course looks out over the Cumbrian Fells.
Market and local information
The Produce & Makers Market is held monthly in Colvend from April to November. Check the specific dates before your trip, as a monthly schedule does not specify a particular market day. Colvend also has a tourist information centre, a local point of reference for planning your trip.
Bus route 372 runs between Dumfries and Dalbeattie along the A710 coastal road. If you are using this connection to plan your trip, check the current official timetable, as routes and timetables can change.
