Fajardo: Coast, Nature and Cultural History
Accommodation in Fajardo
Coastal Features Around Seven Seas
Balneario Seven Seas in Fajardo is about 2,000 feet long and 165 feet wide. These approximate measurements describe a distinctly elongated stretch of beach. According to the description, two rocky outcrops and an offshore coral reef contribute to calm waters.
There are pavilions at Balneario; camping requires a permit for which a fee is charged. In November 2007, Seven Seas was added to the Blue Flag list as its newest beach. Check current conditions regarding facilities and permits before your trip.
La Zanja has a different coastal feature: the natural pool forms when Atlantic waves hit the rocks and fill a long rock crevice. Playa Colorá and Playa Escondida are part of the Corredor Ecológico del Noreste. At La Zanja, the focus is on how a pool forms, while the two beaches are identified by their inclusion in an ecological corridor.
Nature and Activities
Traditional, nighttime and themed tours are offered at the Reserva Natural Cabezas de San Juan. They take place by trolley, bicycle or kayak and are led by experts in the area’s history and nature. The tours differ both in their themes and in their modes of transportation. For specific planning, check the provider’s current reservation information.
Para la Naturaleza offers talks, special events, volunteer opportunities and citizen science activities at Cabezas de San Juan year-round. Dates vary; check the online calendar and follow the reservation instructions. In addition to tours, the program offers other ways to engage with the area’s nature and history.
El Faro de Fajardo, Puerto Rico’s oldest lighthouse, is located within the nature reserve. A visit to the area therefore also offers the chance to see a historic landmark.
Culture and History
Catedral Santiago ApĂłstol was founded in 1766 and added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on September 18, 1984. Another ecclesiastical designation followed in 2008, when the parish of Santiago ApĂłstol in Fajardo was designated the cathedral of the Diocese of Fajardo-Humacao. Its founding, its addition to the historic register and its designation as a cathedral mark distinct milestones in its history.
