Yauco brings together coffee-related attractions, public art and named cultural sites. When planning your stay, you may want to consider several things: when to visit for the Festival del Café, which cultural sites to include, and whether you are also interested in Bosque Estatal de Susúa. The Yauco Municipal Tourism Office offers detailed printed maps, informational brochures about the Coffee Route, and personal assistance for groups. Since the availability of these services may change, contact the office in advance if needed.

Cultural Sites and Getting Around

Named cultural sites include Casa Filardi, also known as Casa Muñoz. The house is located at the corner of Calle 25 de Julio and Baldorioty. Logia Masónica Hijos de la Luz is on Avenida José Celso Barbosa in Barrio Pueblo Sur; Teatro Ideal is in Barrio Pueblo in the municipality of Yauco. Note the different Barrio designations: Pueblo Sur is the location given for the Logia, while Pueblo is the one given for Teatro Ideal. This distinguishes the two locations, while Casa Filardi is identified by its street corner.

Murals and Art in Public Spaces

In the Cantera sector, guided mural tours are offered that connect visitors with local artists and the municipality’s history. Contact the Tourism Office for the current tour schedule. In addition, Yaucromatic is a public art project with four editions and more than 60 artworks that turn the town center into an open-air art gallery. The mural tours and the art project have different focuses: one connects visitors with artists and local history, while the other brings together a larger number of works in public spaces.

Coffee Culture and the Festival

The Festival del Café in Yauco takes place annually in February and includes coffee tastings. Dates and program details may vary from one edition to the next, so check them if you would like to plan your trip around the festival. The first official edition of the Festival Nacional del Café took place in 1975. Along with the informational brochures about the Coffee Route offered by the Tourism Office, these details give coffee a place of its own in your travel plans: you can choose between a seasonal festival visit and learning more about the Coffee Route in general.

Bosque Estatal de Susúa

Bosque Estatal de Susúa is located in the subtropical moist forest zone and covers 3,341 cuerdas (3,240.77 acres). It lies between the municipalities of Yauco and Sabana Grande, at the foot of the Cordillera Central in southwestern Puerto Rico. Its area and regional location describe the forest from two perspectives: its size and its position between the two municipalities, at the foot of the mountains. As a nature attraction, this moist forest differs from the cultural sites, murals and coffee tastings, which are also among the interests described in connection with Yauco.

Archaeological Sites in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico also has archaeological sites in Utuado and Ponce. Parque Ceremonial Indígena Caguana in Utuado is considered one of the most important Taíno archaeological sites in the Antilles. Several ceremonial plazas, known as bateyes, are located in the center of the park. Ceremonies, dance rituals and ball games called Batos were once held there. The park also exhibits petroglyphs, pottery fragments and other limestone artifacts made by the Indigenous population during the 14th and 15th centuries.

In Ponce, Centro Ceremonial Indígena de Tibes is considered an important Taíno archaeological site on Puerto Rico’s southern coast. The museum at the center displays weapons, pottery artifacts and figures representing deities, known as Cemíes. Utuado and Ponce add their own archaeological sites and exhibits to the range of places to visit in Puerto Rico.
