Excursions along forest paths

First consider which destination is most important to you, and plan your outing around it. When planning the individual route, it is worth checking the route and current conditions before setting out.
Local history and the church
Tarnawa Dolna was established in the 14th century during the settlement of the Skawa Valley. This dates back several centuries before the construction of the present-day Church of St. John Cantius. The village’s history and the church’s architectural history therefore represent different historical periods: the early origins of the village and the construction of a church building in the late 19th century.
The present-day brick church was built from 1878 to 1882. Bishop Albin Dunajewski consecrated it on September 3, 1882. The construction period and the consecration date mark different steps: construction spanned several years, while the consecration took place on a specific day. The shared year, 1882, makes the sequence between the end of the construction phase and the consecration clear.
The architecture is also described precisely: the church has three naves and a pentagonal apse, which is narrower than the main nave. Two different aspects come together here—the division into three naves and the shape and relative width of the apse. Comparing it with the main nave makes the proportions within the building easy to understand.
The church houses several historical furnishings. The altar cross is late Baroque and was donated by the Tarnowski family. The painting “The Annunciation” was painted by Józef Maultz in 1846; there is also a stone baptismal font from the first half of the 19th century. These objects offer different historical points of reference: for the cross, the style and donor family are important; for the painting, the artist and year of creation; and for the baptismal font, the material and period. This makes it possible to understand the furnishings through a range of different details.
A statue of Saint Anthony in Tarnawa Dolna dates from the 18th century. Its date provides another point of reference in the area’s history.
