Avellaneda Partido: Street Art, Water and Railway History
Accommodation in Avellaneda Partido
The Pintó la Isla project has transformed Isla Maciel into an open-air museum with more than 900 murals. Other highlights to visit in Avellaneda Partido include a 19th-century artificial lagoon, a municipal nature reserve and access to the coast of the Río de la Plata. Nature, water, culture and railway history give the trip different points of interest. To plan your visit, you can first decide which stops you want to shape your days.
Geographic Orientation and Railways
Avellaneda Partido borders the Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires to the north, Quilmes Partido to the south, Lanús Partido to the west and the Río de la Plata to the east. The Matanza-Riachuelo watershed forms the natural boundary with the Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires.
The Roca railway also provides a practical point of reference: it crosses the partido and serves the Avellaneda, Sarandí, Villa Domínico, Wilde and Gerli stations. When choosing a hotel base, you can take these station names into account and then check which connections suit your destinations.
Nature Reserve, Lagoon and Coast
Since 2018, the Eco Área has been a municipal nature reserve. It covers 140 hectares in total, with a 45-hectare core zone. Environmental education, talks, guided tours and scientific research take place in this core zone. If you plan to take a guided tour, check the current schedule in advance.
La Saladita in Sarandí is a 19th-century artificial lagoon. It is home to the Escuela Municipal de Canotaje, where canoeing is free. The two places offer different experiences: the Eco Área includes environmental education and guided tours, while canoeing is the main activity at the lagoon. If you want to make canoeing a fixed part of your day, check the municipal school’s current offerings in advance.
Parque del Río in Villa Domínico offers another way to enjoy the water: visitors can access the coast of the Río de la Plata, and the park has a bike path. You can weigh coastal access and cycling as interests for this park, while La Saladita is associated with free canoeing.
Street Art and Film
As an ongoing neighborhood initiative, Pintó la Isla shapes Isla Maciel’s art scene. More than 900 murals have transformed the neighborhood into an open-air museum, with a focus on street art throughout the neighborhood itself.
A report dated May 30, 2022, described the exhibition space at Museo Leonardo Favio, at 463 12 de Octubre, as featuring reconstructions of some of Favio’s best-known film sets and numerous original materials from Favio. The exhibits may change; if these specific highlights are important to your visit, check the latest visitor information in advance. Its film-focused exhibitions differ from the murals in the Isla Maciel neighborhood.
Railway Heritage
Parque del Fútbol in Avellaneda Centro has a skatepark and brings its history to life through preserved railway features such as silos and sleepers. Both a recreational activity and tangible evidence of railway history are in focus here.
The former railway station building in Sarandí preserves its original architecture, designed by Alejandro Bustillo. The two places have different focuses: at Parque del Fútbol, preserved railway features tell the story of the park; in Sarandí, the former station’s architecture shapes the historic character of the area.
