San Fernando combines an ecological natural area by the river with a rich urban history. For travelers planning a stay, two themes take center stage: nature and environmental education around the EcoParque, and churches, historic buildings, and the city’s history. Professional guided tours provide further insight into the city’s past. The following places and dates can help you choose a focus for your trip.

River Nature and Environmental Education

The EcoParque is an ecological protected area within San Fernando and a green riverside spot where the delta reaches the mainland. Visitors can learn about native species and discover more about nature. The area also serves to protect the environment and wild flora and fauna. Nature observation and environmental education go hand in hand here: the park combines learning about native species with protecting their habitat.

Urban History and Architecture

Quinta El Ombú is a historic site in San Fernando. The ombú tree after which the estate was named still stands today. In 1805, Viceroy Rafael de Sobremonte rested in its shade. He visited to inaugurate the canal and lay the church’s foundation stone. Today, the municipal sports department is based there. This place thus brings together a story passed down from the city’s history and a present-day municipal use.

Parroquia Aránzazu stands opposite Plaza Mitre on Constitución and was declared a provincial and municipal landmark in 1988. Its exterior is Neo-Romanesque, while the interior is Neoclassical. The basilica-style floor plan includes three naves, a main altar, and six smaller altars dedicated to various saints. The upper windows feature rose-shaped stained glass. The combination of floor plan, altars, and windows gives the church a richly layered architectural character.

The library and Juan Nepomuceno Madero Folk Museum also have a long history: Juan Nepomuceno Madero founded them in 1873 at the suggestion of Amancio Alcorta and with the support of friends and neighbors. It is one of the oldest libraries in the country. The Museo de la Ciudad San Fernando de la Buena Vista is housed in one of the last late-19th-century buildings to retain its original form. The building is Neo-Romanesque in design and features some eclectic alterations.

Further architectural stories span the 19th and early 20th centuries. Palacio Belgrano-Otamendi was built between 1860 and 1870 to plans by architect and artist Joaquín Mariano Belgrano. Palacio Sans Souci was built from 1914 to 1918 and inaugurated with a grand celebration attended by the society of Buenos Aires at the time. The different construction periods provide two historical reference points without requiring them to be assigned to a single era.

Regional Context in Partido San Fernando

The broader destination of Partido San Fernando is home to the Reserva de Biósfera Delta del Paraná. It covers more than 90,000 hectares in the second and third island regions of the Bajo Delta Bonaerense, which belongs to the Municipio de San Fernando. In September 2000, following a proposal submitted by the Municipalidad de San Fernando, the area was recognized as a biosphere reserve at the 16th annual meeting of UNESCO’s International Coordinating Council in Paris.
