San Esteban brings together the RĂo Dolores, a municipal swimming area and cultural sights. When planning your stay, you can focus on different things: time by the water, walks, architecture and local culture. Getting there and the wider Departamento Punilla region also help you plan your stay.

RĂo Dolores and the municipal swimming area

The RĂo Dolores begins in San Esteban, where the RĂo San JerĂłnimo and Arroyo Cruz Grande meet. The municipal swimming area has a natural pool used for cooling off. A walk can start there; you can also walk along the riverbanks. For those who want to combine time by the water with some exercise, the swimming area offers both a possible starting point for a walk and paths along the riverbank.

The swimming area also serves as the venue for the Feria de Artesanos, Productores y Artistas. The fair features musical performances and food stalls. A horseback ride along the RĂo Dolores heading south is another suggestion. This is another activity idea connected to the river, but a different way to experience the area than taking a walk from the swimming area.

Sights and cultural history

Among the notable buildings is the Torre Molino Hércules in San Esteban, which was declared a historic cultural asset by national decree on October 28, 2014. A windmill in San Esteban was designed by engineer Gustave Eiffel. Two chapels also offer distinct cultural highlights: the Chapel of Sagrado Corazón de Jesús is designed in the colonial Baroque style, while the Chapel of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores is more than 150 years old.

Casa San Sebastián and the former railway station offer further connections to the town’s history. Casa San Sebastián belonged to the family of former governor Ambrosio Olmos. The former station building houses the Escuela Municipal de Ceramistas. The home of Gustavo Martínez Zuviría, known as Hugo Wast, inspired his work Flor de Durazno. These places and stories complement the riverside landscape with architectural, historical and literary themes.

Departamento Punilla: landscapes and activities

Beyond San Esteban, Departamento Punilla offers a regional setting of its own. At 1,979 metres, Cerro Uritorco is the highest point in northern Punilla. Quebrada del Condorito is a V-shaped gorge 800 metres high and 1,500 metres wide at its broadest point. Andean condors can be observed from its upper edges; the national park is located partly in Departamento Punilla.

The reservoirs of Departamento Punilla also offer a range of activities: the region has five major reservoirs where visitors can fish. Sailing and motorised water sports are also available at the reservoirs. Another regional highlight is the Camino de los Artesanos, which connects Villa Giardino and La Cumbre over a distance of nine kilometres. These landscapes and activities are part of Departamento Punilla and are distinct from the sights and activities mentioned in San Esteban.
