Daroca reveals its medieval urban layout, sacred art and routes through the landscape. If you’re looking for a hotel in Daroca, these themes can help give your trip a focus: explore the city’s history, compare the routes described by their approximate duration, or plan your stay around seasonal events.

Old Town, Walls and Fortifications

Daroca’s historic old town is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural. The medieval town center is surrounded by walls approximately 3.5 kilometers long, dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. Castillo Mayor is also part of the fortification history: it is Daroca’s former Muslim citadel and the main fortification in the city’s defensive ring.

Another structure tells the story of flood control. La Mina is a 600-meter-long hydraulic tunnel from the 16th century. Its entrance is near Puerta Alta. The tunnel was built to divert torrents and prevent flooding in the city. If you include La Mina in your plans, check local access conditions.

Churches, Mudéjar Art and Museum

Different historical influences come together at the Iglesia de San Juan. Its apse was completed in the 13th century by Mudéjar craftsmen using brick, while retaining the Romanesque design. The church probably stands on the site of one of the former mosques in the Muslim city of Daroca. The Iglesia de San Miguel, in turn, was begun in the late Romanesque style and largely completed in an early Gothic style. Inside, a wall altarpiece painted in tempera has been preserved; its central motif depicts the Coronation of the Virgin Mary.

The Casa de los Luna adds to the picture of historic architecture: this 14th-century palace features Mudéjar decoration on its wooden ceilings and windows. The Museum of History and Art of Daroca is housed in the former Hospital Santo Domingo. Its archaeological collection comprises more than 400 pieces. They illustrate the settlement of the Daroca area and its comarca, as well as a pre-medieval history beginning in the second half of the 4th millennium and continuing throughout the 3rd millennium BC.

Walking and Cycling Routes

The Ruta de las Murallas offers two different time frames: a route to the castle that takes about 45 minutes, and a walk along the walls lasting approximately two hours. The shorter castle route and the longer walk along the walls can therefore be chosen according to the time available; both durations are approximate. Daroca’s Ruta Monumental takes 1 hour and 45 minutes and starts at the tourist office at C/Mayor No. 44. The tourist office can adjust the duration and starting point.

Several signposted hiking trails run through the Pinar de Daroca. Check local route availability and conditions before setting out. Daroca also has a dedicated network of mountain bike and road cycling routes called Ibérica Bike; check the latest route information before departure.

Landscape and Seasonal Events

Daroca’s grain fields provide habitat for great bustards, little bustards and stone-curlews. These species are among the ecologically valuable steppe birds. Their presence is seasonal, and sightings are not guaranteed. If birds are a reason for planning your trip, bear in mind the seasonal nature of this wildlife attraction.

The events calendar also has seasonal highlights. The Festival Internacional de Música Antigua takes place every summer. Concerts are held in the city’s two most important churches and are led or performed by the course’s instructors; dates and program may vary from year to year. The Feria Medieval de Daroca takes place every year on the last weekend of July. Its medieval market features craftspeople, musicians and performers, among others. Annual dates and the program may also vary.

A Local Link to the Confectionery Trade

The confectionery trade is also part of the local craft tradition: the Segura family opened a confectionery shop in Daroca in 1874, and the craft has been passed down through five generations since then. Together with the buildings, museum collection and routes, this gives a varied picture of the city that you can take into account when planning your stay, according to your interests.
