Sos Del Rey Católico brings together medieval architecture, churches and themed tours. The castle, Palacio de Sada, Iglesia de San Esteban and the medieval Lonja offer different ways to explore the town’s history.

Castle, Churches and Historic Buildings

The castle of Sos Del Rey Católico is an irregularly laid-out 12th-century fortification with a square keep. Seven gates remain from the medieval walls. The historic ensemble was designated a “Conjunto Histórico-Artístico” in 1968. Together, these buildings and the designation offer an impression of how closely the town’s history is tied to its medieval architecture.

Iglesia de San Esteban is a 13th-century Romanesque church with a fortress-like appearance. Its crypt dates from 1056 and contains three apses. It also features 14th-century Gothic wall paintings. This building thus brings together different historical periods.

Iglesia de San Martín de Tours was the chapel of the original castle. Palacio de Sada was built on the site of this castle. This historical connection links the church with the site where the palace now stands.

Palacio de Sada, Fernando el Católico and Film History

Palacio de Sada is the birthplace of Fernando II of Aragón, known as Fernando el Católico. The palace houses the “Fernando II de Aragón” Interpretation Centre. The medieval Lonja also tells of the town’s former functions: it was built to serve as a market and a meeting place for the town council.

Another historical trail leads to the film “La Vaquilla”, which was shot in Sos Del Rey Católico in the summer of 1985 under the direction of Luis García Berlanga. The Ruta de la Vaquilla features twelve chairs placed around the municipality at some of the film’s filming locations. The birth of King Fernando el Católico is also celebrated in March. The programme may vary; if you are planning your trip around this celebration, check the latest dates.

The tourist information office also offers walks through the most mysterious corners of Sos Del Rey Católico. These combine suspense and surprises with theatrical elements; dates and availability may vary.

For longer walks, the GR-1 long-distance trail passes by the Parador de Sos Del Rey Católico and continues to Torre de Añués. The walk there is listed as taking less than two hours; walking time may vary depending on pace and conditions. Check trail conditions before setting out. The A-127 road is the natural access route to the Parador.

Restaurant and Hotel Planning

At the Parador’s Las Cinco Villas restaurant, the cuisine focuses on seasonal vegetables from the surrounding area and Ternasco de Aragón. If you plan to dine there, check the current menu in advance, as it may change.

When looking for a hotel in Sos Del Rey Católico, your travel dates and planned activities can help guide your choice: a guided tour, a themed walk and the GR-1 each have their own scheduling or trail conditions. This makes it easier to plan your stay around the sights and experiences that interest you most during your trip.
