Villalengua lies on the banks of the Manubles. Two themes in particular shape the town and help with travel planning: religious architecture and routes through the Vega. The Peirón de la Purísima Concepción and the tower of the Iglesia de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora are cultural landmarks; the PR-Z 95 crossing and the SL-Z 32 trail offer concrete options for those interested in hiking. When choosing your destination, you can consider whether you are more interested in religious architecture, a longer hiking route or the river landscape.

Culture and architecture in Villalengua

The Peirón de la Purísima Concepción is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in the Monument category and is classified as a religious wayside shrine. It stands in the lower part of Villalengua, at the intersection of two streets that run at different levels. This location places the monument within the town’s streetscape. The Iglesia de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora has an octagonal brick bell tower, topped by a tower roof with a curved profile. Its material, shape and roofline are specific architectural features. If you are interested in religious architecture, both the protected wayside shrine and the church tower, with its clearly defined details, offer points of interest.

Hiking trails and stage details

The PR-Z 95: Valle del Manubles is a 48.0 km crossing that passes through Villalengua. On the section near Villalengua, at the point where the village meets the valley road, the route reaches a hiking-trail signpost at 749 m. The distance given for this point is 8.5 km, with an estimated time of about two hours. The approximate time and elevation mark provide a reference for this point along the stage; they do not refer to the full length of the crossing.

After leaving Villalengua, the PR-Z 95 descends to the Vega and then crosses a bridge over the Manubles. Since river conditions can vary seasonally, it is worth taking them into account when planning this section.

Another trail waypoint is on the SL-Z 32: the trail leads to the Fuente de Juan Cuebierta, which is about 100 m beyond the point where the trail is reached. The details for the two trails provide different kinds of guidance: for the PR-Z 95, the elevation, distance and approximate duration of a waypoint are given; for the SL-Z 32, the focus is on the spring’s location in relation to the trail.

The Vega and its landscape

The Vega of Villalengua is an extensive area with high-quality fruit trees. The Ermita de San Juan is also located in the Vega, with a recreational area featuring picnic tables. The Vega and the hermitage are thus defined both by their landscape and by a specific place for recreation.

The Cárcamas offer a different aspect of the landscape: these are ravines formed by erosion on Monte de la Hinojosa, opposite Villalengua. In contrast to the broad Vega and its fruit trees, the focus here is on the landforms created by erosion. Together, these different features can guide your decision to visit Villalengua: its religious buildings, the trail waypoints described here or the local landscape.
