Establiments: Gardens and Local History
Accommodation in Establiments
Establiments offers two distinct historical perspectives: the gardens of Son Berga Nou and the origins of Establiments Vell, also known as es Rutló. The gardens are located on the Son Berga Nou estate in Establiments. Garden design, the manor house and the paths give the place a tangible historical context. If you also want to consider a place’s history when choosing a destination, these topics lead to two different focal points: a garden on an estate and a 16th-century settlement origin. The historical connections therefore extend from the origins of the settlement to the garden and architectural history of the 18th century.
The Gardens of Son Berga
The gardens are laid out in distinct areas. A spacious landscape garden lies to the northwest; to the northeast, the grounds include several areas shaped by agriculture. In this way, different areas make up one place: the landscape garden is one part, and the agriculturally used land is another. This gives an impression of the grounds that goes beyond a single garden space.
In the 18th century, the gardens of Son Berga introduced the Italian garden style to Mallorca. Their significance therefore extends beyond the layout of the estate and points to a development in garden design on the island. The estate is also home to a rural manor house, which was specifically rebuilt in the second half of the 18th century. These two details emphasize different aspects: the history of the garden style places Son Berga in a broader context in Mallorca, while the construction date firmly anchors the manor house in the 18th century.
In the design, the house is a central focal point because of its elevated position; all the landscaped paths lead towards it. The layout of the paths thus forms part of a unified composition: the house provides the focus, and the paths are designed to lead towards it. This creates a tangible link between architecture and landscape design, alongside the gardens’ historical role in Mallorca.
es Rutló: Origins and Paths
Establiments Vell, also known as es Rutló, originated in the 16th century through the occupation of the Son Gual de Pocafarina estate. In chronological terms, this settlement predates the history of Son Berga: the Italian garden style was introduced there to Mallorca in the 18th century, and the manor house was rebuilt in the second half of the same century. The local history therefore encompasses two clearly distinct historical focal points.
Paths lead from es Rutló’s small square to the cemetery or to Sarrià. These two destinations make the choice of route clear: the cemetery or Sarrià. If you plan to take one of these paths, check before setting out whether it is currently accessible.
