In Gurendes, local history meets a landscape between the river and the Sierra. The village is divided into three areas: Barrio de Arriba, Barrio de Medio and Barrio de Abajo. This division provides an initial point of orientation; the Church of San Miguel, the Casa-torre, and the routes along the Omecillo and through the Sierra offer further points of interest.

Churches and Architectural History in Gurendes

The parish church of San Miguel is built of masonry. Its tower has a square ground plan and is topped by a lantern. Inside, Baroque vaults span the rectangular ground plan. The Baroque high altar features a relief of Ecce Homo on the tabernacle door. The furnishings also include the polychrome sculpture Virgen de la Estrella: it dates from the early 13th century, is about 40 centimeters tall, and is located at the altar on the Gospel side.

The monastery of San Salvador de Gurendes was affiliated with San Millán in 1047. Another historic building is the Casa-torre de Gurendes, dating from the early 16th century. Numerous loopholes are set into its left façade. Together, the church and tower house offer different insights into the village’s architectural history, from religious architecture to a building with defensive features.

Landscape and Routes

Gurendes lies on the right bank of the Omecillo and in the foothills of the Sierra de Arkamo. Gurendes and Quejo also lie on the southern slope of the Sierra de Árcena-Sobrón. Stone pines currently shape the landscape around both villages. The Gurendes-Quejo municipal association is connected to Valderejo Nature Park by an ecological corridor.

The Route de la Sierra de Árcena passes through pine forests to higher areas with panoramic views over the valley. The Ruta del Río Quejo offers a different connection with the landscape: this riverside route follows the course of the Río Quejo, a tributary that flows into the Omecillo. The two routes therefore differ mainly in their stated focus: forest, elevation and valley views on one; the river’s course on the other.

The botanical walk from Villanueva to Gurendes is a circular route that takes about 50 minutes and connects the two villages. The walk includes a 2.5-kilometer path that runs parallel to the Omecillo to Gurendes. A description published in 2022 notes a stand of Narcissus minor subsp. minor near the river at Gurendes. With a little luck, the daffodils could be seen there until April or May; flowering times vary from year to year. If you are planning this walk, check conditions for your visit, as trail and seasonal conditions can vary.

Getting There and Finding Hotels
