Discover Izarra
Accommodation in Izarra
Izarra offers a range of possibilities for a trip: walking trails, waterside landscapes and historical connections. When looking for a hotel, you can consider which of these themes you would like to shape your stay.
Walking trails and green spaces
The walking trail on Mount La Calzada is four kilometres long and has information boards, benches and a fountain. Some trails starting in Izarra lead to interesting places, including the Godamo oak grove.
Parque de Ostuño has swimming pools, football and tennis courts, a children's area, picnic areas, barbecue facilities, a fountain, toilets, a bar and changing rooms. Check the facilities locally before your visit. At the entrance to Ostuño recreation park is also the protected individual tree Tejo de Doña Lola, between the Ondona and Marrobaro streams. The tree is a specific natural landmark; the park's facilities are a separate offering.
Lagoons and waterfalls
Lamioxin Lagoon is near Izarra. In the surrounding area, a well-signposted dirt track leads to the lagoon from the right-hand side of the A-2521 road. Cascada de Gujuli is also a specific natural destination: near Izarra, the waterfall plunges over a limestone escarpment with a drop of more than 100 metres. You can reach the waterfall viewpoint via a path that branches off to the right from the A-2521 before Goiuri, when travelling from Izarra or Vitoria-Gasteiz towards Orduña.
Another waterfall destination is the Nervión in the Sierra de Gibijo, which can be reached on foot from Izarra. Cascada de Gujuli and the Nervión are therefore two separate named places, while Lamioxin is a lagoon.
Activities and local history
The “El bosque y el agua” route starts in the Ostuño forest in Izarra, leads to Cascada de Gujuli and then continues to Lamioxin Lagoon. The route's current availability may change; check before making plans. For “Street Scape Izarra Familiar”, the meeting point is at the Ostuño car park in Izarra, Urkabustaiz. Advance booking is required for this activity. Availability, schedules and booking requirements may change, so it is advisable to check before making plans.
A local historical account attributes the development of Izarra's eastern part, known as Barrio Nuevo or La Estación, to the industrial boom of the 19th century. Izarra's station building dates from 1863; the church of San José in Barrio Nuevo from 1948.
Festivals in Izarra
Izarra's main festival days take place from 30 September to 3 October in honour of Our Lady of the Rosary. If you would like to plan your trip around these dates, check the dates for the relevant year. This lets you consider the festivals as a travel occasion in their own right, alongside walks, natural attractions and local history, without treating them as places that can be visited year-round.
