Villanañe lies near the Omecillo and Tumecillo rivers. The town can be explored in different ways through its archaeological remains, historic interiors, religious architecture and landscape. Angosto also offers a recreation area and facilities for cyclists. Culture and nature sit side by side here, each with its own distinct focus.

Early History and Landscape

A settlement dating from the Late Bronze Age or Iron Age stood on the slopes of Monte Medropio in the Barrio de Arriba district of Villanañe. It continued to exist during the Roman period, meaning the history of settlement here spans several historical periods. The Omecillo and Tumecillo rivers are a prominent feature of the landscape; these two themes offer different perspectives on Villanañe.

Torre de los Varona

The official route to the Torre de los Varona is from Vitoria-Gasteiz via the N-1 towards Madrid, then along the A-2622 and, at Villanañe, via a turn-off to the complex. Check local conditions before setting out. Inside, traditional rooms have been preserved with their furniture, wallpaper, ceramics and Kutxak chests.

Santuario de Angosto

The Santuario de Angosto lies in the Villanañe area, by the Tumecillo, and is a place of pilgrimage and religious devotion. The Gothic church was built in the first half of the 14th century. Inside is a six-panel altarpiece depicting the story of the Virgin Mary. The complex also includes a restored parish church and an apparition grotto by the river. The building’s history, religious art and devotional practices are distinct yet interconnected aspects of the site. During a procession, the route leads to the apparition grotto, followed by a meal and traditional dances. If you would like to include this occasion in your travel plans, check the dates in advance.

Angosto: Recreation Area and Cycling

The Angosto recreation area is 1 km from the centre of Villanañe, next to the Santuario de Angosto, and can be reached by road. It is set among dense trees around the centuries-old Encina Juradera. The Encina Juradera, recognised as a notable individual tree, has been preserved; gatherings were held beneath it. The natural setting and its historic communal use are both part of the site.

At the Angosto campsite, the reception desk of the Valderejo-Añana MTB Center offers bicycle repairs and information about various routes. For a cycling trip, it is a useful point of reference: you can ask about routes and factor bicycle repairs into your plans. Repairs and route information address different needs: one concerns the bicycle itself, while the other helps you choose a route. You can make use of this information according to your plans for Angosto.

The Oficina de Información de Valdegovía offers tailor-made visits for groups. Check availability and booking conditions in advance before making the visit a firm part of your plans.
