Enguídanos: Water Landscape and Castle
Accommodation in Enguídanos
Enguídanos can be explored through two distinct highlights: the water landscape of Las Chorreras del Cabriel and the architectural history of the Castle of Enguídanos. The protected natural area of the Hoces del Cabriel is another feature. If you are planning a hotel stay, these themes can help you understand the character of the destination: would you like to focus mainly on water features and a named route, or are you more interested in historic architecture?
Water Landscape and Protected Natural Area
Las Chorreras del Cabriel lies between Enguídanos and Víllora. There, the Cabriel forms a series of waterfalls, stone ramps and large, interconnected natural pools. The natural monument extends for approximately 1.5 kilometres over limestone; it also features small cascades and pools of various sizes. The landscape is therefore not limited to a single waterfall scene: several water features and the stone ramps form part of a connected sequence. Many of the formations are still developing today, making Las Chorreras both a living and a sensitive natural area.
Enguídanos is also located in the protected surroundings of the Hoces del Cabriel. The natural area is characterised by gorges and steep cliffs and is of great scenic value. This offers nature enthusiasts two different perspectives: the specific waterfalls, ramps and pools of Las Chorreras, and the gorge landscape of the Hoces.
Planning a Walk or Cycling Route
The PR-CU-53 walking route through Las Chorreras can be started in the town centre of Enguídanos. The official notice consulted during research on 27 August 2026 prohibits access to the western slope of Las Chorreras in the municipality of Enguídanos because of the extreme risk of rockfalls. Walking on the PR-CU-53 is the only permitted activity; access to the bathing pools is prohibited. Check the official notice again before your visit.
Another option is available for a mountain biking trip: the BTT cycling route through Las Chorreras and La Hoz del Cabriel is intended for exploring both natural destinations in Enguídanos. Walking and cycling differ here in activity and focus. The PR-CU-53 is the designated walking route, while the BTT cycling route takes you to explore two named natural destinations. If you are deciding between the activities, the mode of transport and the stated purpose of each route can help guide you.
The Castle of Enguídanos
The origins and later form of the Castle of Enguídanos should be distinguished chronologically: the castle dates from the 11th century; it acquired its present appearance, with sturdy, symmetrical walls, in the 14th century. Its style is simple Gothic. The wall retains three towers that reinforce the corners. The dates and architectural features thus provide different kinds of information: the centuries place the origins and appearance in context, while the walls, symmetry, style and towers describe the architecture. For travellers interested in architectural history, the castle offers a different focus from the natural sites: here, the emphasis is on historical context and specific building features rather than water formations and routes.
