Discover Calzada De Oropesa: Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Calzada De Oropesa
La Calzada de Oropesa offers a variety of starting points for planning your trip: historic buildings and squares, landscapes and trails, and local festivals. You can focus on the subjects that interest you most and check the dates of recurring events separately when planning.
Squares, Buildings and Historic Traces
Plaza de España is the center of La Calzada de Oropesa. It is home to the town hall, the Rollo de Justicia and the Pilón. A roughly 80-meter-long section of a paved road recalls the medieval Calzada. The oldest section may date from the 14th or 15th century. According to local tradition, La Calzada was founded along the route of the Roman road that connected Emérita Augusta, present-day Mérida, with Caesaróbriga, present-day Talavera de la Reina, and Toletum, present-day Toledo.
Casa de la Hidalga is an example of the local traditional manor-house architecture of the 19th century. Its distinctive portal is made of dressed stone blocks. The building also preserves a traditional olive press with a wooden screw and a stone for grinding olives. Casa de la Familia Huertas-Vega displays a different architectural style: construction began toward the end of the 19th century and was completed in 1912. Part of its original furnishings has been preserved.
The history of how individual buildings were used is also part of the townscape. Casa de los Presbiteros was built in the 17th century to house the parish's canons and priests. A convent was established between 1675 and 1704 on the site of the former Hospital de la Misericordia. Casa de la Castilla dates from the 17th century; a Hospital de la Misericordia also stood on its site previously. The church's main altarpiece is 17 meters high and includes paintings by the Baroque painter Claudio Coello. Pozairón recalls a public washhouse that had up to 40 stone washbasins with engraved names in the mid-20th century.
Dehesa Boyal and Natural Attractions
The wooded Dehesa Boyal de La Calzada covers just under 400 hectares. Its landscape includes stands of holm oak, a pine forest and pastureland. Animals found there include rabbits, foxes, genets, wild boar, roe deer and red deer. Well-maintained trails are suitable for hiking and cycling. The named route Itinerario Sendero Natural runs for about 10 kilometers through Dehesa Boyal.
Laguna de las Limas is the largest livestock watering place in the municipality of La Calzada. It has developed into a recreational area of high ecological value, with a diverse range of fauna and flora. A Late Roman necropolis was discovered beside the lagoon. Pilón de Carrasca is a stone spring with three basins; its water comes from the natural underground spring Las Madres del Pilón. The site is currently used for walks, picnics and nighttime stargazing.
A roughly 30-meter-high eucalyptus tree stands in the Eucaliptos area and is listed in the catalog of notable individual trees under the name “El 31.” The Romería de la Virgen de Fátima takes place there on the second Sunday in May. Another event was Día de la Laguna: since 2018, this multi-adventure day was held in August, with activities such as kayaking, archery, horseback riding and traditional games. The exact program may vary.
Festivals and Culinary Events
Event programs combine competitions with regional dishes. At the VI Concurso de Vinos de Pitarra 2023, free Cocido popular was served to all participants. At the 8º Concurso de Vinos de Pitarra in February 2025, the wines entered in the competition were available for public tasting at stands in the square. The 8º Certamen de la Tapa also took place that same weekend. The program for the XIII Matanza Tradicional in March 2025 included Migas with chocolate and Aguardiente. These examples offer insight into different types of festivities; check dates and food separately for future editions.
Whether you plan your trip around architectural history, nature trails or an event date, the places and subjects mentioned show different sides of La Calzada de Oropesa.
