Cazalegas: Reservoir, Nature and Mudéjar Heritage
Accommodation in Cazalegas
When planning a stay in Cazalegas, you can focus on water, nature or local history. The Cazalegas Reservoir shapes excursion plans with its bathing and recreation area and sport fishing; in town, you’ll also find a designated circular hiking trail, historic sites and activities available by prior request.
Reservoir and trails
The Cazalegas Reservoir covers around 150 hectares and holds water from the Alberche River. Its inlet is part of the Natura 2000 network, specifically the Site of Community Importance “Sotos del Río Alberche.” The reservoir is designated as a bathing and recreation area. If you plan to swim, check the latest official guidance beforehand, as bathing suitability and seasonal conditions may change.
Sport fishing takes place in the reservoir, whose waters are home to largemouth bass, carp, pike and barbel. If you plan to fish, check the regulations and permits separately. The PR-TO 59 “Cazalia” circular trail is listed as open and has a low difficulty level. As its condition may change, check its current status before setting out.
You can reach the reservoir from the town centre by car along the road or on foot via the walkway. This lets you plan your day around your preferred way of getting there. The circular trail and access to the reservoir offer different options for enjoying an active outdoor stay.
More activities and nature visits
Wake Park Cazalegas offers lessons for children and adults at its Wakeschool. Places are limited and may change; check dates and availability in advance. This activity can be considered separately from your plans for the reservoir.
Nature visits differ mainly in how they need to be arranged. The Centro de Interpretación de la Naturaleza is next to the Vivero; visits to the existing nature trails are available by prior request. Organised visits to the Centro de Educación Ambiental del Río Tajo include a tour of the Centro de Interpretación del Río Tajo and a themed walk about the water cycle. These visits depend on the current schedule and prior arrangements. If you’re interested in water, the walk about the water cycle offers a different focus from the designated “Cazalia” circular trail.
Local history and Mudéjar heritage
In the centre of Cazalegas stands the parish church of San Vicente Mártir, an important Mudéjar-style building. The traditional El Caño structure offers a different perspective on local history: it was once associated with washing clothes and neighbourhood gatherings, and was restored and renovated in 1997. While the church brings Mudéjar heritage to the fore, El Caño recalls everyday community work.
The local festival calendar also includes a fixed date: the feast of Saint Vincent Martyr, San Vicente Mártir, is celebrated in Cazalegas on 22 January. If you plan to attend the celebration during your trip, check the programme for that year, as the specific events may change.
