Layos lies in the southwest of the province of Toledo. The provincial capital is 12 kilometres away, and the CM-4013 road connects the two places. When looking for a hotel for a stay in Layos, it helps to start by deciding what you would like to focus on locally: heritage, paths and landscapes, or golf. These different themes provide a practical framework for planning your trip.

Heritage Between Palace and Local History

The Palacio de los Condes de Mora is a medieval castle-palace set within an extensive walled complex. It includes the palace itself, a garden and service buildings. In 1991, it was protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the “Monument” category. The palace is privately owned; visits are possible by prior appointment. Arrange your visit before you arrive.

The archaeological site of El Vizcaíno is also part of the town’s history. It lies on both sides of the Camino de Ajofrín, on the right bank of the Río Guajaraz, and is partially preserved. Descriptions from 1627 and 1654 mention mosaic fragments and tombs. The site may be connected to a branch of the Roman road between Toletum and Emérita Augusta.

The parish church of Santa María Magdalena is a small rectangular church with a single nave and an almost square apse. It was built in the 14th to 15th centuries; the nave may date from the 16th century, while the tower was built later. These different dates make the building’s history a distinctive aspect of the town’s architecture.

The Layos elm is closely associated with the history of the municipality and is part of its coat of arms. A historical description from 2010 identified it as Ulmus minor and estimated its age at more than 300 years. A recurring event in the annual calendar is the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, held every year on 14 September. If you choose this period for your stay, check the latest event details before travelling.

A Trail and Landscape by the Guajaraz Reservoir

The 2.5-kilometre Senda ecológica has rest stops and recreational areas. It begins at the place known as El Prado, next to Layos’s sports centre. The route follows the Camino de Pescadores to the southwest shore of the Guajaraz Reservoir and continues to the municipal boundary. Information panels cover the local flora and fauna, as well as the reservoir. Check local conditions before setting out.

The municipal area comprises three landscape zones: plateau, foothills and mountains. The vegetation also varies. At higher elevations, there are oak forests with sparse undergrowth of rockrose and heather. In the foothills, holm oak stands grow alongside rockrose, thyme and rosemary. Scattered junipers grow in colder areas, while wild pear trees and turpentine trees grow in warmer ones.

Golf Campo de Layos

The Golf Campo de Layos course was designed by Stirling & Martin-Global Golf. Since opening in 2001, it has had 18 holes and a par of 72. Its practice area includes 20 teeing positions, ten of them covered, and a depth of 250 metres. A golf school with professional instructors for adults and children is also available. If you are planning lessons, check the golf school’s availability before travelling.
