Montesclaros appeals to several distinct travel interests: Late Gothic buildings, traces of lime production, local traditions and hiking opportunities. If you want to combine cultural history and hiking, these themes offer a concrete framework for choosing where to go. History and landscape come together particularly closely on the Ruta de los Caleros, which leads to former lime production and processing sites.

Church Architecture and Historical Traces

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios dates from 1552. Its tower was built from ashlar in the Gothic style toward the end of the 15th century. The two details refer to different parts of the building and different dates: the church dates from the 16th century, while the tower goes back to the late 15th century. The Rollo de Justicia adds to the picture of Late Gothic architecture. The monument was built in the 15th century in the Late Gothic style. The Ermita del Cristo de la Misericordia is also closely associated with local devotion and popular celebrations.

Another historical trace is the Pozo romano, a well built in a typical Roman style from granite blocks. Its origin and date are uncertain. Lime production may also be linked to the settlement's beginnings: it may have developed through the use of local lime kilns, known as caleras.

The Lime Industry and Trails Through the Landscape

The PR-TO 26 Ruta de los Caleros is a 7.96 km circular trail of low difficulty. Route details may change; check the latest information before setting out. The trail passes through former limestone extraction and processing sites, including lime kilns and dolomite quarries. It runs through a tree-filled dehesa and pine landscape east of the Sierra de San Vicente.

The white dolomitic marble quarries of Montesclaros were used mainly for the lime industry. The blocks used for the La Cibeles and Neptuno fountains in Madrid were extracted from them in 1780 and 1781, respectively. The fountains provide a concrete link between the history of the quarries and buildings outside Montesclaros.

The Ruta de los Molinos de Montesclaros offers a different thematic perspective. It leads to old watermills and through scenic natural areas. By comparison, the Ruta de los Caleros focuses on former lime extraction and processing. Montesclaros's location in the Sierra de San Vicente also offers opportunities for hiking.

Festivals Throughout the Year

San Sebastián is celebrated on January 20. In the evening, wine, chorizo and cheese are served to everyone interested at the Centro Social. The annual program may vary; if you plan to travel for the festival, check the latest dates in advance.

Los Huevos is a traditional festival held on Easter Sunday, when the Quintos hang empty eggshells on braided loaves of bread. For the El Leño tradition, the Quintos light a log in the square on the evening of February 4; refreshments are served there at the same time. Nuestra Señora de los Remedios is celebrated on August 15. The events are spread across January, February, Easter and August—a useful distinction if the festival calendar is a factor in your travel plans.
