Olías Del Rey: Churches, Festivals and Sports
Accommodation in Olías Del Rey
In Olías Del Rey, you can plan your trip around a range of interests: religious buildings, recurring celebrations or sporting events. Historical connections to the Camino Real de Toledo and nearby hiking routes add to the range of themes. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first decide whether a festival or a specific sporting event should determine your travel dates. Architecture and hiking, by contrast, offer thematic points of interest without a single event date.
Churches and historic routes
The Iglesia Parroquial de San Pedro Apóstol has a history of construction and renovation spanning more than two hundred years. Its architecture brings together medieval tradition and Baroque and contemporary alterations. This evolution makes the church a cultural point of interest if you are interested in the development of religious architecture.
The Ermita de Santa Bárbara is another religious building in Olías del Rey. On the outside, its stone construction and bell tower define its appearance; inside, it is designed in a folk style, with a single nave, a flat chancel and a round-arched triumphal arch. The interior can be visited on Sunday mornings and on public holidays during Mass at 9 a.m. Visits are subject to the course of the service.
Historically, Olías del Rey was a stopping point on the Camino Real de Toledo: travelers stopped here, stayed overnight and rested. This connection to the history of travel is distinct from the hiking routes that run near the town today.
Festivals and local traditions
The Fiestas Patronales take place every year in late September and early October and include traditional floats. The Fiestas Zona Sur are scheduled for the last weekend in June and include water games for children. The two recurring celebrations therefore take place at clearly separate times of year. If you are planning a stay around a particular year's edition, check the announced dates for that year.
The Romería de San Gregorio is another local tradition. For the 2025 edition that was announced, Parque Jaime de Foxá in Los Pinos was the planned venue. The program included the traditional Rosca de San Gregorio and sangria served to all participants. As the venue for future editions may change, check it before a later visit.
Sports and routes in the surrounding area
The XI Chess Tournament of Olías del Rey was scheduled for May 30, 2026; it counted toward the provincial chess classification and ranking. At a parallel chess tournament in Parque municipal Virgen del Rosario, people of all ages could take part without prior registration or club membership. The two formats thus combined chess with different participation requirements.
The 2025 XXI edition of the Carrera de la Ciruela included children’s categories as well as 5- and 10-kilometer courses for adults. The two adult courses offer different distances, while children compete in their own categories. This distinguishes the format of the Carrera from the chess tournaments without conflating the different competitions.
The Feria Urbana del Deporte is designed as a public participation event: sporting activities are brought to the streets of Olías del Rey so the public can take part and try different sports. The Camino Natural del Tajo also passes near the town and offers hiking routes. Alongside events, hiking is therefore another option for a trip.
