Toledo brings these highlights together in a compact historic setting.

A cityscape between rock and river

The historic city sits on a steep rock above the Tagus. Shaped by twenty centuries of history, it covers about 260 hectares and preserves a significant historical heritage. The site of the Alcázar is also part of this long urban history: it stands on Toledo’s highest hill, in a strategically used location that had been important since Roman times.

Narrow streets define the cityscape. Synagogues, mosques and churches stand side by side, showcasing different artistic styles. From the Mirador del Valle, on the slope of the Valle opposite the historic centre across the Tagus, there is a direct view of the walled city and its monumental silhouette. This makes it possible to see Toledo both in the detail of its streets and as a unified cityscape.

Museums and architecture

The Synagogue of Samuel ha-Leví, commonly known as the Synagogue of El Tránsito, stands in the Jewish quarter. Built in the mid-14th century, it is the emblematic building of the Museo Sefardí. The museum preserves and presents the heritage of Hispano-Jewish and Sephardic culture as an essential part of Toledo’s cultural heritage; the synagogue is considered Spain’s most significant Hispano-Jewish building.

Santa María la Blanca also combines architectural form with a complex history. Until 1411, the building was Toledo’s main synagogue; afterwards, it was converted into a Christian temple. An example of Mudéjar art, it features five naves as well as horseshoe and multi-lobed arches. Santa María la Blanca can be visited individually; individual tickets are available.

The Museo del Greco, also in the Jewish quarter, offers another perspective on art and domestic architecture. It extends across several buildings that recreate the atmosphere of a 16th-century Toledo home. The permanent exhibition includes some of El Greco’s most representative paintings, as well as works by other artists of his time.

Visits and routes

A tour of the Alcázar allows visitors to see some of its special preserved interiors. The cathedral tower is also open to visitors and offers panoramic views over the city. As access to both attractions may change due to operational circumstances, check the latest information before your visit. The Rutas de Patrimonio Desconocido offer additional opportunities to visit, with free guided tours of various monuments, archaeological sites and other restored attractions in Toledo. The programme and available visits may change.

For a different perspective, paths run along the river and the city fortifications. An ecological path follows the banks of the Tagus and circles the historic centre. Another route follows the city walls from the escalators towards Puerta del Cambrón, then turns towards the Tagus before Puente de San Martín. The bridge in western Toledo was already standing by the mid-14th century; its five pointed arches and two hexagonal towers make it a striking city landmark.

Toledo’s religious tradition includes the Corpus Christi procession, which has been preserved; its specific arrangements may change. The Ruta de Santa Teresa de Jesús also includes Toledo: the city is one of the places in Castilla-La Mancha associated with the Carmelite foundations and the reforming work of Teresa of Ávila.

Planning your stay

For information on getting to the city and getting around, the official tourism portal lists trains, buses and parking options. Check this information in advance, as transport services may change. Four tourist information offices are spread across the city; their number and locations may change. The museums, buildings, views and routes described here offer different themes to help you plan your trip to Toledo.
