Historic fortifications, religious architecture and a recurring cultural program shape the themes around which you can plan your stay in Yepes. If you are looking for a hotel in Yepes, this overview can help you choose the focus of your trip: medieval city gates, churches and art, or the Jornadas Calderonianas.

Medieval fortifications and two distinctive gates

Yepes preserves a medieval walled complex with two medieval defensive towers and four historic gates from the former city walls. The Puerta de Madrid, also known as the Puerta de San Miguel, and the Puerta de Toledo, also known as the Puerta del Carmen, both belong to the second ring of walls. Their details make for a particularly clear comparison.

The Puerta de Madrid is flanked by two semicircular towers. On the side facing the town is a painting depicting Saint Michael the Archangel. The Puerta de Toledo also has two semicircular flanking towers; its loopholes and machicolations provide different architectural accents. At the top of a Baroque altarpiece is an image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, facing the town. When comparing the gates by theme, their flanking towers are a shared feature, while the additional defensive details and different images highlight what distinguishes each one.

Churches, a convent and works of art

The religious buildings also differ in their design. The Convento de San José y San Ildefonso is a convent of Discalced Carmelite nuns. Its single-nave church features a barrel vault and a Baroque altarpiece. The Ermita de San Sebastián is a Baroque church dating from the 17th century: its three naves are separated by five stone Doric columns. The Ermita de San José is distinguished by its two levels; the ground floor is built of stone blocks, and the upper floor of masonry.

The Iglesia Hospital de la Concepción brings together architectural features and a history of use. The church is part of a former hospital complex. Its single-nave interior has a barrel vault, five transverse arches and a raised gallery. A 17th-century screen separates the main chapel from the nave. The high altar of the Iglesia Colegiata de San Benito Abad offers a different focus: it consists of fourteen paintings by Luis Tristán depicting episodes from the life of Christ.

Among the secular buildings is the Casa Don Pedro Flores de la Oliva, next to the Plaza Mayor. This Herrerian-style town house is arranged around a square courtyard with a colonnade. The Picota, also known as the Rollo Jurisdiccional, is instead a Gothic symbol of the administration of justice, representing another form of historic design. Its base consists of four steps; carved columns decorated with half-pearl motifs complete the structure.

Cultural program and guided tours

The Jornadas Calderonianas combine cultural and religious events. Since 2000, the Yepes Town Council has organized them during the week around the Feast of Corpus Christi. The program includes a Corpus Christi procession and dramatized tours titled “A Journey through 17th-century Yepes.” The Jornadas also feature a Baroque market in the Plaza Mayor, where local craftspeople and producers offer traditional food and handmade products. Dates, programs and market offerings may vary from one edition to the next, so check the details for your planned visit.

If you would like to discover Yepes through its history and monuments, you can book guided tours of the old town through the tourist information office. Check the current booking arrangements in advance. As a hiking option, the “Las Fuentes del Valle” route is included in the province of Toledo’s “Paseos Naturales” program. This gives you a choice of different focuses when planning your trip: historic architecture and art, a visit around Corpus Christi, or a hiking route.
