Discover Almenar
Accommodation in Almenar
Almenar brings together traces of rural life and milling history with a riverside route and a landscape shaped by the seasons. In the town, the Museu Casa Tonot and historic buildings offer insights into different aspects of life and work. The CamĂ del Riu and the Clot de la Unilla complement these cultural themes with nature and irrigation. This lets you shape your stay around different interests without reducing Almenar to a single theme.
Cultural history and historic buildings
The Museu Casa Tonot is in Almenar’s old town, on Carrer Major. It consists of a single ground-floor room. Parts of the historic structure have been preserved there: vaulted ceilings, stone pillars, stone feeding troughs and stone basins are all part of the building. The themed rooms also display tools from agricultural working life. The architecture and exhibits thus draw attention both to the building itself and to the activities associated with farming.
El Pouet de Gel is an ice house built into a hill near the de la Munya bridge, beside the irrigation canal. Its dimensions—8.25 metres high and 6.85 metres in base diameter—give a concrete sense of its size. Its location by the canal links the structure spatially to the history of irrigation, which is also important to Almenar.
The MolĂ fariner also represents the connection between technology and water management. The first specific information about this grain mill dates from 1328, when a royal privilege was granted for the construction of a mill. The MolĂ fariner had three millstones and a regulated water system. After being used as an energy source, the water flowed back into the irrigation canal through four arches. The three millstones and the regulated watercourse show different aspects of the milling operation; the return of the water also makes its connection with the irrigation system visible.
Riverside route and seasonal landscape
The CamĂ del Riu provides access to the river ecosystem and the Horta, a landscape created through irrigation. The route has very few inclines and is described as pleasant and easy to walk; its good condition is also part of the route description. These are useful points of reference if you are looking for a walk connected with the river and the irrigated cultural landscape. The Horta and the river ecosystem are two distinct aspects of the route.
The Clot de la Unilla lies between Alguaire and Almenar. It is an endorheic lagoon of considerable size and possibly the best-preserved in Catalonia. In years with high rainfall, the Clot temporarily becomes a seasonal lagoon. This has happened roughly once in every three years over the past 40 years. Water levels therefore do not remain constant: the landscape’s temporary nature is precisely what matters. If you are interested in the Clot, take this seasonal variation into account when planning your visit.
Events and dates
The Mercat Medieval takes place on the second weekend of June and features demonstrations of medieval crafts. Check the dates before your trip if you would like to plan your stay around it. The Fira Tast has a different focus: on Sunday at lunchtime, it features an exhibition and tasting of dishes prepared by Almenar residents. Each edition highlights a local product. When planning, you can therefore choose between an event featuring craft demonstrations and one focused on local cuisine; the two offerings have different themes and timings.
When choosing a hotel in Almenar, the historic sites, the CamĂ del Riu and the seasonal lagoon offer different ways to shape your stay around culture, landscape or both. If a particular event date is important to your trip, check it in advance.
