Arànser: Cross-country skiing, mountain lakes and a Romanesque village church
Accommodation in Arànser
Arànser lies at an altitude of 1,470 metres at the end of the river valley of the same name. The Aransa Nordic ski resort is located in the village; Arànser belongs to the municipality of Lles de Cerdanya. If you are looking for hotels for a trip here, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: winter activities, viewpoints, mountain lakes, local history or cycling will lead you to different parts of the destination.
Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing
The Aransa Nordic ski resort has 32 kilometres of cross-country ski trails at altitudes between 1,850 and 2,150 metres. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are among the main activities in winter. The circular routes pass through dense stands of black pine and across high alpine meadows. This combines outdoor winter activity with landscapes shaped by wooded sections and open high-altitude terrain.
Naturpark is the ski resort’s high alpine nature centre. In summer, it is open to families and nature enthusiasts. The seasons therefore offer different focuses: cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are part of the winter offering, while the nature centre provides another way to spend time in the mountain landscape in summer.
Mirador del Pla de Llet and mountain lakes
The traditional footpath to Mirador del Pla de Llet starts at Fornell and follows a marked trail. It takes about an hour to reach the viewpoint. In winter, the Mirador can be reached from the Nordic ski resort on skis or snowshoes. From there, the view extends across the entire Cerdanya Valley and to the Sierra del Cadí. If you are planning to visit the viewpoint, you can choose between the marked footpath from Fornell and the winter route from the ski resort.
The Estanys de la Pera are two lakes in a small glacial cirque at the upper end of the Arànser Valley. Font de les Pollineres is a recreation area with barbecue spots, stone picnic tables and a small mountain hut. A marked trail leads from there to the lakes; the area is also a starting point for ascents to several nearby peaks, including Perafita, Tossal de la Truita, Monturull, Torreta del Soldat and Tossal Bovinar.
To reach the lakes, drive from Martinet along the LV-4036 towards Lles, then take the road to Arànser and continue on a paved track to Fornell. During the summer, when visitor numbers are particularly high, a shuttle bus usually operates there. Before travelling, check locally whether the seasonal shuttle is running during your visit.
Sant Martí d’Arànser
In the centre of the village stands Sant Martí d’Arànser, a church of Romanesque origin with a rectangular floor plan and a single nave. The present-day building was completely rebuilt in the 18th century; the year 1720 is inscribed at the entrance. The roof features a metal structure with two hour bells. The church is 24.05 metres high. Details of its origins, rebuilding and architectural form give a visit a clear historical and architectural context without reducing the church to a single period.
Mountain biking routes and dining
A challenging mountain biking loop covers 23.7 kilometres from Martinet through Travesseres and Músser to Arànser and on to Lles. The Martinet–Lles–Martinet mountain biking route is described as fully rideable. For the loop, the distance, difficulty and sequence of places are specified; for Martinet–Lles–Martinet, the emphasis is on the fact that the entire route is rideable. The details therefore answer different planning questions.
El Fornell restaurant is located by the ski slopes at an altitude of 2,000 metres. It serves homemade dishes as well as grilled meat and vegetables. As the restaurant’s availability is seasonal, check before your trip whether it will be open on your visit date.
