Argolell: Romanesque Art and Rocky Landscapes
Accommodation in Argolell
Argolell can be explored through two very different features: the Romanesque church of Santa Eugènia d’Argolell and the rocky landscape of the Cingleres de Sant Joan i Argolell. There is also a route on the Camí d’Andorra, a guided tour available on request, and dates for two festivals.
Santa Eugènia d’Argolell and its Romanesque features
Santa Eugènia d’Argolell is designated a cultural asset of local interest. The church has Romanesque remains dating from the 12th century. Its raised apse faces east and has a semi-elliptical floor plan. Semi-elliptical describes a floor plan shaped approximately like half an ellipse. The east-facing orientation indicates the direction; “raised” describes the apse’s position within the church building.
The Romanesque wall-painting fragments include depictions of the apostles Paul and Philip, as well as the heads of two other apostles and the Virgin Mary. A Romanesque pictorial program from Santa Eugènia d’Argolell is held at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya. The church itself is in Argolell; the associated pictorial program, however, is held at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya.
Cliffs, geology and birdlife
The Cingleres de Sant Joan i Argolell are large, south-facing cliffs between Argolell and Sant Joan Fumat. They consist of Devonian limestone that is about 385 million years old. Compared with Santa Eugènia d’Argolell, they show the vast difference in age: the limestone is about 385 million years old, while the church’s Romanesque remains date from the 12th century.
Bearded vultures, Egyptian vultures, griffon vultures, golden eagles and peregrine falcons occur at the Cingleres. The presence of these species may vary seasonally. For bird enthusiasts, the time of year is relevant, as the presence of these species at the Cingleres may vary seasonally.
