Bellpuig combines a rich architectural history with routes through the municipality and distinctive local traditions. If you’re looking for a destination with historic buildings and opportunities for outdoor activities, you’ll find a variety of things to explore here: the Sant Bartomeu Monastery and other examples of religious architecture, paths along canals and ponds, and the local stork tradition. Festivals, a guided historical route and regional sweets are also among the town’s highlights.

Monastery, Mausoleum and Historic Buildings

The Sant Bartomeu Monastery is a transitional monument from Gothic to Renaissance. Ramon Folc de Cardona i Anglesola, lord of Bellpuig, commissioned it in 1507. This date provides a historical frame of reference for the building; its architecture combines two successive styles. Giovanni Marigliano da Nola created the mausoleum of Ramon Folch de Cardona-Anglesola between 1523 and 1528.

The Church of Sant Nicolau also offers insight into this architectural development: it dates from the 16th century and combines late Gothic architecture with a Renaissance portal. Bellpuig Castle dates back further. Its origins lie in the 11th century, and it was fortified in the 12th century. Only a few remains of the castle survive, on one of the municipality’s higher terraces. Together, these buildings represent different historical periods rather than a single era.

Traditions and the History of the Old Town

The Bellpuig Tourist Office offers a guided historical route through the old town. Booking in advance is recommended. It’s a way to explore the town center with a focus on its history; if you’re interested, plan to book ahead.

The Festa dels Dolors takes place on the Friday before Good Friday. The ProcessĂł dels Dolors currently consists of six passos depicting notable events from the Passion of Christ. This combines a set date on the calendar with a procession whose elements illustrate religious scenes. The FundaciĂł PerellĂł adds another cultural dimension to Bellpuig: it was founded in 1996 to preserve and promote the work of sculptor Jaume PerellĂł. Visits are available by prior arrangement, so be sure to arrange yours in advance.

Routes Across the Plain, Wetlands and Nature

The Despoblat dels Eixaders route is a very easy trail southwest of Bellpuig. It passes the Canal d'Urgell and a windmill, with views across the plain. These details can help you choose a route: its easy level, its location to the southwest and the views. Check trail conditions locally before setting out.

The Ruta de les cigonyes focuses on stork watching. It is a tourist route through the municipality of Bellpuig. Storks in Bellpuig nest in the same place all year round; however, as with any wildlife observation, sightings depend on natural conditions at the time. Another route leads to the ponds of del Bosc, also called de Bellpuig, and de la Plana, as well as to the district of Seana. This route’s destinations are quite different from the canals and windmill along the Eixaders trail.

The Bellpuig Camina-Molins de la vall del Corb route connects five water-powered mills. These are linked to the Sèquia del Molinar irrigation canal and the Corb River. If you’re interested in water engineering and the history of mills, this route offers a distinct theme among the trails described; the stork route and the route to the ponds offer different highlights.

Activities and Local Specialties

Controlled trout fishing is available year-round in the pond at Parc del Convent; a permit is required. Check the permit requirements with local sources in advance. Pitch & Putt Bellpuig is an 18-hole, par-3 course and is part of Golf Urgell. For an aerial activity, the Volager flight school offers Deltatrike flights of about an hour for one or four people, giving you the chance to see the plain of Bellpuig and the surrounding area. Confirm availability before your trip.

Local confectionery traditions include sweets and confections from the Viuda Pifarré factory, which has been operating for more than a century; some of its products can be sampled. Viuda Pifarré also continues to make Piropos, a hard candy developed in 1926 and made with a guirlache base. This specialty adds a culinary connection to Bellpuig’s historical and natural highlights.
