Discover Boldú: Festa Major del Roser, landscape and local history
Accommodation in Boldú
Boldú can be understood both through its location in the Urgell comarca and through the tangible traces found in the town. The Festa Major del Roser, the Creu de terme and the Església de l'Assumpció represent different aspects of the town: a community festival, a religious monument from the 17th century and older architectural history. There are also routes that take in Boldú itself and the agricultural surroundings in different ways. You can therefore plan your stay around whether you mainly want to discover the festival tradition, the town’s history or the landscape.
Landscape, town setting and routes
Boldú lies at an altitude of 266 m in the flat area of the Urgell comarca, south of the Serra d'Almenara and almost merged with la Fuliola. You can explore this setting on two routes with different focuses. The municipal route Els Plans d'Almenara PR-C72 reaches Boldú at kilometre 24.450. In the town, it follows carrer de Balmes and carrer Major as far as plaça d’Engràcia Macià. The kilometre marker, sequence of streets and square provide specific reference points for this walk through the town.
A route in the area around Boldú, after leaving Castell del Remei, follows the Sèquia de Boldú past vineyards and cereal and fruit fields. Here, the canal and the agricultural surroundings take centre stage; by contrast, the municipal route describes a sequence of town streets leading to a square. The routes thus offer different perspectives: one explicitly passes through Boldú, while the other describes the landscape along the Sèquia. Route conditions can change, so check them before your visit.
Festa Major del Roser
The Festa Major del Roser includes the traditional Plantada del Xop, a sung Mass and a community vermouth in honour of the patron saint. The festival thus combines a long-standing custom with religious and community elements. For planning purposes, the programme for the specific year is what matters: individual details may vary. So before travelling for the event, check the announced dates and programme.
Church and Creu de terme
At the Església de l'Assumpció, the old portal jamb stones are still set into the wall of the former façade. Jamb stones are the stones that frame the sides of a portal. The first documentary references to the church in Boldú date from the 13th century. These written references establish an early historical point of reference, while the surviving jamb stones draw attention to the design of the former façade.
The Creu de terme de Boldú stands at the entrance to the town, in the middle of the main square, and dates from the 17th century. It is a Calvary cross; at its base is a skull symbol. The skull creates a striking sculptural accent and can be viewed as part of the cross’s visual language. Together with the church, the cross offers another point of reference for the town’s history, from a different period.
