Village Center and Getting There

Cabanabona has a small village center that you can explore on foot. You will need a private vehicle to get there; there is no public transport in Cabanabona. As transport options can change over time, check your travel plans before setting off. As well as walking around the village center, allow time to visit historic sites and enjoy activities in the surrounding area.

Churches and Architectural History

The parish church of Cabanabona is dedicated to John the Baptist and is named Sant Joan Baptista. The present church building dates from the 17th and 18th centuries; no remains of the earlier Romanesque church have survived. In the municipal area, in the village of Vilamajor, stands the single-nave Romanesque church of Santa Maria de Vilamajor. The two churches thus represent different periods of construction and different locations within the municipal area. Some houses along Cabanabona’s central streets feature Modernist elements.

Cabanabona’s manor house is also part of the village’s architectural history: it dates from the 18th century and is decorated with Renaissance ornaments. The tower of Vilamajor Castle stands in Vilamajor. It is about five meters wide and around 14 meters high; its top two meters date from a restoration. As well as the churches, there are secular buildings with different architectural and historical associations.

Castle and Views at Sant Pol

Castell de Cabanabona is first mentioned in 1040. It was one of the fortresses along the southern border of the County of Urgell. This early reference provides a medieval point of reference alongside the later buildings in the village and municipal area.

The Sant Pol hermitage is a 17th-century building located on a hill at an elevation of about 500 meters. From the viewpoint there, you can see across cultivated fields and the Serra del Cadí. A 12th-century Romanesque apse is currently being restored at the chapel of Sant Pol and Sant Sebastià. The viewpoint, the hermitage building and the restored apse are different aspects of the cultural heritage around Sant Pol.

The gathering at the Sant Pol hermitage takes place on the Sunday before the Monday of Pasqua Granada. If you would like to plan your stay around this date, check the date for the year in question.

Hiking and Rural Cycling

The area around Cabanabona offers opportunities for hiking, both across the municipality’s flat terrain and over its smaller hills. The surrounding paths are suitable for rural cycling. So, both types of terrain are part of the hiking options described, while cycling focuses on rural routes. The small village center, by contrast, can be explored on foot. This distinction can help you choose between a stay focused on local history and an outing with more time in the surrounding area.

For a trip focused on churches and architectural history, the different locations and historical periods offer a range of points of interest. If you would rather spend time outdoors, you can consider hiking and rural cycling as separate activities. When planning your stay, you can make architectural history and outdoor activities two distinct priorities.
