El Palau D'anglesola: Churches, Pilgrim Routes and Festivals
Accommodation in El Palau D'anglesola
El Palau d’Anglesola can be explored through several distinct highlights: churches and historic buildings, pilgrim routes, local festivals, and a park with recreational facilities. When planning your trip, consider whether you want to focus primarily on architectural history, a particular route, or a specific festival date.
Churches and architectural history
The Església Sant Joan Baptista was built between 1798 and 1807 in the Neoclassical style. This makes it considerably later in date than the 16th-century buildings that are also part of the town’s history. Cal Massot is a 16th-century manor house in the old town; only its stone façade has survived. The Ermita de Santa Llúcia also dates from the 16th century and is built against the cemetery wall. Its square floor plan and stone façade characterize the chapel. Together, the three buildings represent different functions and periods: a church, a manor house and a chapel.
Another architectural point of interest is the Cooperativa del camp Sant Roc. Part of the building was constructed by the architect Cèsar Martinell i Brunet and features modernist elements. The Rutes del vi route leads to a former wine cellar and olive oil mill belonging to the former agricultural syndicate, another building by Martinell. The architect’s name is thus associated with two distinct local sites: part of the Cooperativa and a former wine and olive oil production building. The Rutes del vi therefore broadens the focus from religious and residential architecture to the area’s former agricultural use.
Pilgrim routes and orientation
The Camà Ignasià passes through the town of el Palau d’Anglesola and is marked there with signposts. In 2026, the pilgrim refuge in el Palau d’Anglesola is run by 23 volunteer hospitaleros from the Amics del Camà association. These route and pilgrimage connections add another perspective to the town’s historic sights.
The Camà de Sant Jaume also passes through el Palau d’Anglesola and continues along the Catalan route towards Lleida and Santiago de Compostela. The two route names can be distinguished by their respective local connections: the Camà Ignasià is associated with its course through the town and its signposts, while the Camà de Sant Jaume continues towards the two destinations named above.
Culture and festival dates
La Passió has a completed performance history: it was staged at the Teatre Victòria in el Palau d’Anglesola from 1953 to 1971, revived in the 1980s, and finally discontinued in 1992. This sequence sets the theater’s history apart from the town’s recurring festival traditions.
The Festa Major d’estiu is held annually on 29 August in honour of Sant Joan Baptista. Activities include Sardana dancing, Correfocs, a fireworks display and the Matinal Cicloturista bike ride. For Sant Joan, Diada dels Països Catalans, on 24 June, the Flama del Canigó is carried through the town’s streets and squares on the night of 23 June, and a communal bonfire is lit. An Aplec in honour of the saint is held annually in the Parc de l’ermita de Sant Roc on 16 August. Sant Joan falls on 24 June, followed by the Aplec on 16 August and the Festa Major on 29 August. If you are planning your trip around a particular festival, check the date and current programme in advance.
Landscape and recreation
The auxiliary canal of the Canal d’Urgell crosses the municipality and is known locally as the Subcanal. The Parc dels Drets de la Infà ncia i Adolescència brings together a circular walking path, a skate park and a zip line. The park thus adds specific recreational facilities to the architectural and route-related highlights.
