Discover El Pont De Suert
Accommodation in El Pont De Suert
If you are planning a stay in El Pont De Suert, you can focus on three distinct themes: the medieval town centre, the churches and buildings, and the paths along the Noguera Ribagorçana. An annual fair and a traditional procession also shape the local cultural scene. These points of interest can help you get your bearings in El Pont De Suert and choose what to focus on during your trip.
The Old Town and Sacred Architectural Heritage
The Old Town dates back to the Middle Ages, particularly the 13th to 15th centuries. Plaça del Mercadal was created as an extension of the Old Town. Two sides of the square are lined with arcades; most of the buildings were constructed in the 18th century. The development of the townscape can be traced through this square: its origins lie in the expansion of the medieval Old Town, while much of its present-day building fabric dates from a later period.
Casa Jaumot, also known as Ca de Jaumot, is a Baroque palace house in the Old Town. Another historic complex brings together the Església Vella and the former Palau Abacial. The church was built in the Romanesque period, around the 12th century, and was extensively altered during the Baroque period in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Palau Abacial was the residence of the abbots of the Monestir de Santa Maria de Lavaix. The Església Vella also houses the Col·lecció d’Art Sacre de la Ribagorça.
The EsglĂ©sia de l’AssumpciĂł offers a different point of reference in time: it was consecrated on 7 September 1955. The architectural design was drawn up by Eduardo Torroja Miret in collaboration with JosĂ© RodrĂguez Mijares. Together, the buildings offer a glimpse of different periods in local sacred architecture—from the Romanesque church, with its later Baroque alterations, to the EsglĂ©sia de l’AssumpciĂł, consecrated in the 20th century.
Riverside Paths and Routes
The Noguera Ribagorçana flows through El Pont De Suert, and its banks offer opportunities for walks. Els Ponts del Pont is a two-kilometre circular route with an easy difficulty level. Following the Noguera Ribagorçana, it forms a central riverside corridor. If you would like to include a local walk in your travel plans, this route has a clearly stated name, length and circular format.
The CamĂ de l’Aigua is described by its starting and ending points: it begins at the Font de la Mena near El Pont De Suert and ends at the Balneari de Caldes de BoĂ. The route is suitable for mountain biking (BTT), signposted throughout with directional markers, and closed to motor vehicles. Its permitted use and course therefore differ from those of the two-kilometre Els Ponts del Pont circular route. The Grand Tour of Catalonia also passes through El Pont De Suert: its third stage is called «Molt a prop del cel».
Wildlife and Local Traditions
The Centre de Fauna de Pont de Suert focuses on semi-aquatic mammals. Since 2013, its work has also included the ex situ breeding of the critically endangered Montseny brook newt. This focus links the broader theme of wildlife with a specific species conservation programme.
A culinary event is the Fira de la Girella. It takes place every year on the third or fourth Sunday in October. Girella is a sausage made with rice and lamb, traditionally produced in the Pyrenees. If you would like to include the fair in your travel plans, check the specific date for your year of travel.
At the Falles de Casós, the procession starts on the edge of the village when the bells of the Església Vella ring. Participants cross the palanca d’Aragó and follow Carrer d’Avall to Plaça Major and Plaça del Mercadal. There, they form a circle and throw their torches into the middle, where a large fire is lit. Drinks are then served, and the celebration continues until dawn. The procession thus follows a set route through the village, leading to a communal fire and the celebration that follows.
