El Vilosell combines a medieval street layout with buildings from different periods and marked trails through the Serra de la Llena. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in El Vilosell, these highlights can help you plan your trip around your interests: local history, hiking or the town’s connection with wine. Specific points of interest range from cobbled streets and churches to routes of varying lengths and destinations.

Historic Townscape and Buildings

In 1177, King Alfonso I ordered the construction of El Vilosell Castle; remains of the former castle have survived. In addition to these castle remains, the town is characterised by a medieval street layout with cobbled streets and corners.

The parish church of Santa Maria is a Baroque, single-nave church; its buildings include the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament and the baptistery. It also has Romanesque foundations and remains. The hermitage of Sant Sebastià is a Renaissance-style building; a 14th-century Gothic stone cross stands in front of it. These buildings offer different points of reference for understanding the architectural periods represented in El Vilosell.

Serra de la Llena and Hiking Routes

The protected Serra de la Llena covers 142 hectares within the municipality of El Vilosell. Several marked routes from El Vilosell pass through the landscapes and corners of the Serra and nearby areas. Near Les Fontetes, the Baroque hermitage of Sant Miquel de la Tosca stands in an area of natural and scenic interest within the municipality.

A marked hiking route, 3.7 kilometres in total, leads from Plaça de Sant Sebastià via the Crucifici to the hermitage of Sant Miquel de la Tosca. Trail conditions may vary depending on the season; check them before setting out. Another route leads from El Vilosell to Vilanova de Prades, with the option of continuing the ascent to Punta del Curull.

Routes with Different Highlights

The Ruta de les Cabanes de Volta del Vilosell is a seven-kilometre cycling and hiking route. Compared with the 3.7-kilometre hike ending at Sant Miquel de la Tosca, it is longer and is also designated for cycling. The El Vilosell section includes nine additional shelters and other dry-stone structures that can be visited. This section begins 1.2 kilometres from the hermitage of Sant Sebastià. The routes therefore differ in length, use and destination or thematic focus.

Wine and Local History

The winemaking area of the Tomàs Cusiné winery is located in a stately building that formerly housed El Vilosell’s wine and olive oil cooperative. The winery shop sells wines from D.O. Costers del Segre made by Tomàs Cusiné. The selection may change; if interested, check the current range in the shop. El Vilosell is also included in the Ruta del vino tourist circuit.
