Enviny: Church Art and Trails
Accommodation in Enviny
Enviny is a mountain village at an altitude of 1,134 m above the Barranc de Montardit. Church art, architectural history, literary connections and trails through the Batlliu de Sort offer different ways to explore the area. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Enviny, these highlights can help structure your plans: the parish church can be understood through its architecture, while the history of the altarpiece spans a Gothic original and a later reproduction. Sant Roc and the route through the Batlliu de Sort offer another thread to explore; the festivals also provide specific dates for planning your trip.
Church, Altarpiece and Local Stories
The parish church of Mare de Déu de la Purificació is also known as Candelera. Its tower has an octagonal upper storey and a pyramidal roof. In front of the parish church is a necropolis with five tombs dating from the 9th and 10th centuries. Enviny therefore brings together an architectural feature of the church and an archaeological site with a clearly specified date.
The original Gothic altarpiece was created in 1490 by the painter Pere Espallargues. It was sold around 1909 and is now divided between the Hispanic Society of America in New York and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. A complete reproduction of the altarpiece, made using Papelgel, a Catalan technique, was inaugurated in 2009. The year it was created, its sale and its later reproduction mark different stages in the history of the same work.
A former manor house and a former school building are also part of the village’s architectural and cultural history. Casa Aytés is among Enviny’s architecturally notable buildings. The former school, the Estudis, served as a setting for Jaume Cabré’s novel and the miniseries Les Veus del Pamano. A photograph of pupils taken in front of the school building became the novel’s cover image. The history of the Estudis is thus connected both with the literary work and with the image that accompanied its title.
Sant Roc and the Trails in the Batlliu de Sort
The ruins of Sant Roc lie in the area around Enviny. A 1 km trail leads to them; the old paving has survived in some sections. The ruins are those of a single-nave church with a semicircular apse, whose roof is no longer extant. Both the building’s layout and its present state of preservation are therefore relevant to understanding it. The ruins are at an altitude of 1,304 m. From Sant Roc, there are views of Torreta del Orri to the east and of the Montardit valley.
The route through the Batlliu de Sort reaches Sant Roc a few minutes after the trail junction marked at 2:25 hours. On the section from Enviny to Bressui, the route descends along a heavily paved trail that has deteriorated over time. Weather, maintenance and use can change trail conditions, so check them before setting out. In Enviny, the route also passes the ruins of the chapel of Santa LlĂşcia. The references to Sant Roc and Santa LlĂşcia thus describe different stops along the route.
Road Connection and Festivals
The local road LV-5222 starts in Enviny and connects the village to Sort via Llarvén and Montardit de Dalt. Local road conditions can change, so check them before you drive.
