Escunhau combines a village scene of stone houses and intersecting streets with Romanesque heritage and paths into the surrounding countryside. This gives you two distinct points of focus when planning your trip: Sant Pèir d’Escunhau, with its architecture, and access to Lac d’Escunhau, as well as paths through the forests of La Tuca. If you are looking for hotels in Escunhau, information about culture, routes and difficulty levels can help you tailor your stay to your interests. The church and routes offer different perspectives: on the layout of a Romanesque portal, access to a mountain lake, and trails with historical or scenic character.

Village scene and Sant Pèir d’Escunhau

The centre of Escunhau consists of intersecting streets and numerous stone houses in the traditional Aranese architectural style. Both the street layout and the traditional building style shape the character of the village. Those interested in architecture will find a tangible example of Romanesque heritage at Sant Pèir d’Escunhau: the church is part of the Ruta Románica de Arán, the Romanesque Route of the Val d’Aran.

The layout of the portal is easy to make out: three concentric arches and two archivolts supported by columns frame the entrance. Alongside this architectural structure, the church preserves a distinctive furnishing. A large Romanesque marble baptismal font stands on a simple cylindrical base in a small side chapel that serves as a baptistery. The portal and font thus illustrate different details of the church: the design of the entrance and a Romanesque object with clearly specified material and support.

Guided visits to Sant Pèir d’Escunhau are offered during the summer months as part of the Ruta Románica de Arán. Check dates and opening hours in advance so you can work the visit into your travel plans.

Paths to the lake and through the forests

Access to Lac d’Escunhau begins in Escunhau: the forest track to the trail runs for 8 km to a small car park and a hut. From there, you can reach the lake via a comfortable climb of less than an hour. There are two sections to distinguish: the 8 km refers to the forest track to the car park and hut; the stated duration applies to the subsequent climb. You can therefore consider each part of the route separately when planning. Trail conditions may vary by season; check them before setting out.

La Tuca lies at an altitude of 1,800 m and stretches along the right-hand edge of Vielha, Betren, Escunhau and Casarilh. Forest tracks and hiking trails lead from these villages through dense fir forests; the routes vary in difficulty. This area therefore offers a different point of reference from the route to the lake: when choosing a hike here, the main consideration is that the trails vary in difficulty.

Camin Reiau and Pueblos de Castièro can also be distinguished by their respective character. Camin Reiau follows paths that once connected the different villages of the Val d’Aran and were already used by the Romans in antiquity. The historical connection between the villages shapes this part of its description. Pueblos de Castièro, by contrast, follows a section of the track that climbs to the former La Tuca ski resort. The route passes through a shady forest of ash, maple and oak trees before reaching Escunhau and Casarilh. Different features are therefore important for finding your way: the former connection between villages on Camin Reiau, and the forest described and the route to the two villages on Pueblos de Castièro.
