Estamariu: Churches, Monastic History and Trails
Accommodation in Estamariu
Estamariu combines sacred architectural history with an elevated position above the Urgellet plain. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay here, the local highlights can help you shape your trip around your own interests: churches and monastic history, trails or local festivities. In the village and the municipal area, you will find a range of ways to explore culture and landscape and plan a visit.
Churches and sacred history
The Romanesque church of Sant Vicenç d'Estamariu was built around 1040. The parish church of Santa CecĂlia dates from the 17th century. This places two distinctly different periods of construction side by side: Sant Vicenç points to an early medieval period, while Santa CecĂlia belongs to a later era. Those interested in sacred architectural history will find two points of reference in Estamariu, separated by a considerable span of time.
The wall paintings at Sant Vicenç are also part of the church's history: they were conserved and restored in two phases between 2003 and 2007. This period is clearly distinct from the approximate construction date of 1040. The work on the paintings thus represents a separate, much later chapter in the history of their preservation.
Sant Vicenç de Pinsent is also part of the historic picture: the remains of the former monastery are in the municipal area, and its church was built in a cave. This site adds another connection to Estamariu's sacred history alongside the two churches.
Landscape, trails and getting there
The village center of Estamariu is situated above the Urgellet plain. The plain is also a key landscape feature of the hiking route to Bescaran. The Mirador de la carretera d'Estamariu viewpoint is also located in the municipal area.
The hiking route from Estamariu to Bescaran starts at the Romanesque church of Sant Vicenç d'Estamariu. It offers spectacular views of Bescaran and Estamariu, particularly of the Urgellet plain. Both villages and the plain are therefore among the tour's named viewpoints. As trail conditions may change, check them before setting out.
A short, interesting trail described in November 2013 leads northeast of the village to the MolĂ d'Estamariu mill. It offers a destination of its own for anyone interested in the local cultural landscape.
To get there, a winding local road leads from the N-260 to Estamariu and continues northeast from there to Bescaran. Check road conditions before driving. This allows you to consider the road journey and the hiking route as different options for getting around and planning your trip.
Festivities and trip planning
January 22, the feast day of Sant Vicenç, and November 22, the feast day of Santa CecĂlia, are local festive days in Estamariu. If you would like to plan your stay around either date, check the dates again before travelling. These two days on the calendar are specific reference points for planning a visit during the year.
The Festa Major d'Estamariu includes a communal dinner in the village's main square. The dinner gives the festival a communal feel and locates it in a specific place in the village. Along with the two local festive days, it offers another reason to check the local calendar when planning your trip.
