Gessa between Mountain and Stream

Gessa lies at the foot of Mount Corilha and beside the Corilha stream. Both the paths leading out from the village and the buildings that shape its streetscape offer practical points of reference when planning a stay. One hike leads to the Sant Martí de Corilha hermitage; the churches and old houses feature distinctive architectural elements, coats of arms and dates. You can choose between exploring the mountain landscape and discovering the village’s architectural history as separate highlights.

Churches and Historic Houses

Sant Pèir de Gessa brings together architectural features from different periods. The church has a detached, square bell tower dating from the 17th century. A Baroque altar incorporates a Romanesque altar base, and there is also a Romanesque chapel foundation from the 12th century. The tower, altar and foundation represent different styles and historical layers. The square bell tower can also be compared with the cylindrical tower of a house in the village: both are distinctive architectural forms, but belong to different types of building.

The old house Çò de Ròsa has a cylindrical stone tower with carved coats of arms. The lintel bears the year it was built: 1589. At Çò de Chelina, a coat of arms bearing the date 1575 has been preserved. The two houses therefore have different distinguishing features: at Çò de Ròsa, the tower, coats of arms and lintel stand out, while at Çò de Chelina, it is the dated coat of arms. When exploring Gessa on foot, you can visit these houses as stops in the village’s history, alongside its churches.

Hikes and Routes

A hike from Gessa to the Sant MartĂ de Corilha hermitage takes just over an hour. The chapel is at an altitude of 1,800 m; the hermitage is built into the mountainside rock and lies at approximately the same altitude. This hike therefore has a specific destination in the mountain landscape. Another route from Gessa passes the Montromies hut and offers a different waymark.

The Salardú–Unha–Gessa route follows the GR-211 and passes through Gessa to the upper part of the village. Its path leads to Sant Pèir Church and the manor house Çò de Ròsa. Route 16 Ruta BTT offers the opportunity to visit Gessa and its churches and fortified houses. These routes differ chiefly in their stated destinations: the high-altitude hermitage, the Montromies hut or the village’s historic buildings. Gessa is also included in the route sequence of the Camin Reiau. The circular hiking route is 150 km long and passes through 33 villages in the Val d’Aran.

Pilgrimage and Patronal Feast

Gessa’s annual pilgrimage to the Sant Martí de Corilha chapel takes place on the second Saturday in June. The patronal feast of Sant Pere is celebrated on 29 June. The two dates have different associations: the pilgrimage leads from the village to the chapel, while the patronal feast is dedicated to Sant Pere. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these occasions, the dates provide a concrete starting point for planning.
