Ivorra: Castle, Religious Buildings and Nature
Accommodation in Ivorra
Ivorra offers several distinct points of interest for a trip: the walled settlement, the castle and its buildings, religious traditions, and the Espai d’Interès Natural del Llobregós, a natural area of special interest. If you are looking for a hotel in Ivorra, this overview will help you understand what the place has to offer: its historic buildings tell of different uses, while its routes offer another way to explore the destination.
Castle, settlement layout and historic buildings
Two distinct structures can be seen at Ivorra Castle. The 20-metre-high round tower known as the Torre del Moro survives in good condition. The castle also has a cistern measuring 7 × 5 metres and 4 metres high. At the castle, both the surviving tower and the cistern’s specific dimensions are highlights.
The walled settlement preserves elements of its original layout: sections of wall, narrow lanes and a portal with a voussoir vault. This portal served as the entrance to the settlement. Cal Millàs is right beside it and served as the town’s hospital in the Middle Ages. The portal thus offers two distinct perspectives on Ivorra: the preserved structure of the settlement and the former use of an individual building.
El Casalot de la Morera adds a military building type to the picture. Its rectangular defensive structure has thick walls and several loopholes. The base is made of stone, while the upper section is built of rammed earth with blue plaster bound with lime. The transition from the stone base to the earthen upper section makes the different construction elements easy to see.
“La Farinera” is the popular name for a building on a plot of land in Ivorra, beside the LV-3003 road from Torà to St. Ramon. It lies 1.1 kilometres before the turnoff to the village. The road and turnoff details provide a specific point of reference for locating the building in the surrounding area.
Religious traditions and art
Ivorra’s religious history takes different forms. The Santuari del Sant Dubte is associated with a Eucharistic miracle dated to 1010; mementos, documentation and relics have been preserved. The parish church of Sant Cugat d’Ivorra offers a different focus: it was designed by the master builder Francesc Pons, who came from Solsona, and preserves a Gothic reliquary from 1462. It contains a piece of bloodstained cloth. The years 1010 and 1462 refer to different things: the tradition about the miracle and the date of the reliquary. This makes it possible to consider religious memory and a specific work of art separately.
Nature, viewpoint and springs
The Espai d’Interès Natural del Llobregós, a natural area of special interest, offers three routes for hiking or cycling. Before travelling, check locally which routes are currently available. The Mirador de la plaça Major is a designated viewpoint in Ivorra and complements the routes with a named spot from which to look out over the landscape.
Outside Ivorra, at Coll de la Figuera, lies the Font de La Figuera. It was built from medium- and large-sized dressed stone blocks. A round arch made of voussoirs forms a kind of niche; in the past, it housed an image of the Virgin Mary. The structure thus combines a specific architectural form with a reference to its former religious furnishings.
A snapshot of a time-specific event
At the 2024 edition of the Festa de Sant Galderic, there was a market featuring local producers and artisans. Each participant offered a tapa to eat on site. The market and tapas provide a specific glimpse of that edition. If you are planning your trip around an event, check the dates for your chosen travel period.
