La Granja d'Escarp is a destination for anyone looking to combine a river landscape with natural and cultural heritage. The defining feature is the Aiguabarreig Segre-Cinca natural area: it begins where the Cinca flows through La Granja d'Escarp and meets the Segre, then follows the Segre along its course near Seròs. The confluence of the rivers and the landscape along their banks are therefore at the heart of the area.

River Landscape and Birdlife

At the Aiguabarreig, green riverbanks meet a dry, barren hinterland. The natural area is a biological corridor where species from different habitats come together. Many migratory bird species breed, overwinter, or stop here; the area is also notable for its remarkable diversity of birds. The landscape and wildlife are closely connected, giving a stay here a distinct focus on nature.

The river stretches and areas associated with the Aiguabarreig cover 760.96 hectares and have been protected since 1992. Most of this area lies within the municipality of La Granja d'Escarp. Those interested in the region can consider its natural environment, birdlife, and protected status as interconnected aspects, rather than reducing the Aiguabarreig to a single viewpoint.

Trails along the Segre and Routes in the Municipality

The CamĂ Natural de l'Aiguabarreig Segre-Cinca runs through the municipality along the left bank of the Segre. There are also mountain biking and hiking routes from the village to Punta de Montmaneu. Along the way, you can visit remnants of the Spanish Civil War and several disused lignite mines. This focus on routes combines outdoor activity with traces of recent history and the area's former mining industry.

Another landmark is the Passera de fusta: this wooden walkway continues the Camí Natural del Riu Segre through the Sant Jaume riverside forest. For families, Els Enigmes d’en Pius is a permanent orienteering game along the Aiguabarreig nature trail. Using an orienteering map, marked waypoints, and small clues, visitors can explore the natural area independently, playfully, and educationally.

Archaeology, Buildings, and Industrial History

Route 3 – El poble i l'Ermita de Sant Jaume starts in the town center and leads to the hermitage on a hill. Route 3 offers views of the confluence of the Segre and Ebre rivers. The chapel dates from the 17th century and stands on the left bank of the Cinca, about one kilometer upstream from where the Cinca meets the Segre. The parish church of Sant Jaume provides a different architectural accent: the 18th-century building is neoclassical, and its octagonal bell tower rises above the town.

The area's archaeological and historic sites also tell different chapters of its story. The Abric del barranc de Sant Jaume is part of the Rock Paintings of La Granja d’Escarp World Heritage Site. The Jaciment de la Serra del Calvari is a settlement site covering about one hectare, with an orthogonal layout and paved streets. It lies on a roughly semicircular promontory near the confluences of the Segre and Cinca rivers and of the Segre and Ebre rivers.

The complex of buildings at the cement factory, which opened in 1879, is part of the area's industrial history. It included lignite and limestone mines, kilns, a landing stage on the bank of the Segre, and an animal-powered railway. Local heritage therefore ranges from prehistoric rock paintings and a settlement site to the facilities of a former industry.

Festivals and Practical Information

The festival calendar includes the Sant Jaume festival on July 25, with a procession and a solemn Mass. The traditional festival of married women, les Àguedes, takes place on February 5. After Mass, blessed Coca pastries are handed out; the festival also includes a procession in honor of Saint Àgueda and a dance. These two dates and their customs offer different insights into local traditions.

For a break outdoors, the Barbacoes Municipals i Zona Pic-Nic has eight barbecue grills, two tables, stone benches, a water point, and a waste bin. To use the area, you must request a permit and collect the keys from the town hall. This practical step can be taken into account when planning a visit to the barbecue and picnic area.
