La Torre De Cabdella: Hydropower and Mountain Trails
Accommodation in La Torre De Cabdella
La Torre De Cabdella combines a distinctive history of hydropower with Romanesque architecture and mountain activities. This gives you several focal points for planning your trip: industrial history, churches and chapels, as well as trails and mountain sports.
Local history of hydropower
The Capdella hydroelectric power station is located in the municipality of La Torre de Cabdella in Pallars Jussà . It was the first large hydroelectric power station to go into operation in Catalonia and is one of the 150 essential elements of Catalonia’s industrial heritage.
The Museu Hidroelèctric de Capdella is part of the territorial system of the Museu Nacional de la Ciència i de la Tècnica de Catalunya. It is housed in a former office and doctor’s surgery building next to the hydroelectric power station. Guided tours take you through various parts of the facility. This lets you explore the museum and power station as different facets of the region’s industrial history.
The museum also organises visits and activities to explore the mines of Castell. As the specific arrangements may change, it is best to check the details of these offers if you want to include them in your plans.
The museum also includes the Cardboard Hospital, an icon of prefabricated and ephemeral architecture. It was built more than a hundred years ago to care for people injured during the construction of the hydroelectric power station. Another trace of this construction history can be found along the Via Verda de la vall Fosca: it follows the route of a small railway used to build the hydroelectric facilities in the early 20th century.
Romanesque architecture and art history
The small chapel of Sant Martà in La Torre de Cabdella has a rectangular floor plan and a semicircular apse with Lombard bands. At Sant Julià d’Espui, the square bell tower is the most clearly visible and best-preserved part of the Romanesque structure. The two descriptions highlight different architectural features: the floor plan and apse in one case, and the distinctive tower in the other.
In Cabdella, the Romanesque church of Sant Vicenç is considered one of the village’s main attractions. It overlooks much of the valley from the upper part of the village. The 12th- to 13th-century Christ of Cabdella comes from the church of Sant Vicenç de Cabdella in the municipality of La Torre de Cabdella. The cultural interest therefore extends from the design of the buildings to the history of an artwork.
Trails, mountain sports and cable car
There are various hiking options in La Torre de Cabdella. From Estany Gento, you can access trails of varying difficulty that lead into AigĂĽestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park. Ski touring is also possible in La Torre de Cabdella. The Pedals de Foc mountain-bike route passes through Vall Fosca and has a checkpoint in La Torre de Cabdella.
The GR-11-20 variant of the Pyrenean Trail also offers a clearly defined route: its section between Cabdella and BoĂ crosses the Port de Rus. This route, the mountain-bike circuit and the trails from Estany Gento are different options; choose according to your preferred activity and, for the trails from Estany Gento, the stated level of difficulty.
The Telefèric de la Vall Fosca reaches an altitude of 2,200 metres and provides access to Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park. The ride takes 14 minutes and covers an elevation gain of 450 metres. During the summer months, the Telefèric de Sallente provides access to Estany Gento; operating dates may vary. Check them before making plans if you are relying on this connection.
Practical information for your stay
A car is essential for travelling to La Torre de Cabdella and between the localities in the municipality. Take this into account when planning to visit several places or take part in different activities. Other local features include regulated fishing in the Flamisell and in higher-altitude lakes nearby, as well as river trout as part of the local cuisine.
If you are looking for a hotel, your different travel interests can help you plan your stay: the history of hydropower and Romanesque architecture offer cultural highlights, while hiking, ski touring and mountain biking bring other activities to the fore. The summer connection to Estany Gento and the need for a car to travel to the area and between localities in the municipality are also practical considerations when making your choice.
