Llés: Hiking, Cross-Country Skiing and Architecture
Accommodation in Llés
When choosing a hotel in Llés, it is worth considering your travel dates alongside the activities you have planned. Marked summer trails from Refugi Cap del Rec, cycling tours, cross-country skiing and historic buildings offer different possibilities. You can first decide whether hiking, cycling, winter sports or culture should be the focus of your stay.
Seasonal trails and activities
In summer, marked hiking trails start from Refugi Cap del Rec, including GR-11 route variant 10. The Trinxat stage-based mountain biking tour passes by the refuge. The Muntanya de Lles cycling route takes a different course: from Martinet, it follows paved side roads and wide forest tracks into the high mountain areas of Lles de Cerdanya. The key difference when choosing between these cycling options is their route: Trinxat passes by the refuge, while Muntanya de Lles runs from Martinet via side roads and forest tracks into the highlands.
In Aransa, summer activities include excursions, electric bike rentals and horse-riding routes. Individual offerings may vary by season. The La Llosa River flows through the municipality of Lles de Cerdanya and is considered a fishing area. This means there are a variety of activities to choose from, including cycling, horse riding and fishing.
Refugi Cap del Rec is located directly beside the slopes of the LLES ski resort.
Mountains, lakes and panoramic views
Tossa Plana de Lles, also called Pic de la Portelleta, is the second-highest peak in Cerdanya at 2,916 m. From the summit, the view stretches across Cerdanya and Andorra, as well as west across the Pyrenees and beyond Maladeta as far as Pic Mièidia de Bigorra. To the south, you can see Cadí and Baridà, and to the east, Canigó. These named directions give the panorama a clear geographical orientation.
Estanys de la Pera are two lakes in a small glacial cirque at the upper end of the Arànser valley, in the Riu del Molí catchment area. A cirque is a small hollow formed by glacial ice. Unlike the expansive summit panorama, the two lakes offer a different kind of scenery: a mountain landform where water takes centre stage.
Cross-country skiing and winter route planning
Cap del Rec is a cross-country skiing facility in Lles de Cerdanya. The Aransa cross-country skiing facility is located near the village of Arànser in the municipality of Lles de Cerdanya. The mountain refuge is in the El Fornell area. These details distinguish the location of the village of Arànser from the area where the refuge is situated.
The Muntanya de Lles route has a specific winter restriction: it cannot be completed on foot or by vehicle in winter because the forest track between the Aransa and Lles cross-country skiing areas is closed. The access track to Prat Miró and Les Pollineres is also closed to motor vehicles year-round; local conditions may change. If you plan to use one of these routes or access roads, check the current local notices in advance.
Romanesque and Baroque buildings
Sant Fructuós de Músser has an 11th-century apse with blind arches made of tuff. Capella del Roser o del Benefici de Lles is a small Baroque chapel with a square floor plan and a polygonal apse. Inside the chapel is a Greek cross carved from limestone, with a bas-relief of Christ enthroned. Sant Sebastià de Viliella preserves a Romanesque baptismal font carved from a single block of granite. Each site features a different detail: a historic apse, a chapel’s floor plan, a carved cross and a monolithic baptismal font.
The route through Vall de la Llosa also has a historical dimension: it follows a crossing into Andorra that was once used by smugglers, shepherds, bandits and farmers. This history adds another perspective on the region’s past to the story told by its buildings.
