Ponts brings together Romanesque architecture, religious art, festive traditions and leisure activities. Depending on your interests, different aspects of the town come to the fore: historic architecture, community festivals, the collections of the Museu Francesc Boncompte or leisure areas. If you are looking for a hotel in Ponts, these highlights can shape the focus of your stay.

Church, arcades and religious art

The Romanesque church of Sant Pere de Ponts stands on a terrace on the southern slope of Sant Pere mountain. In April 1931, the republican Generalitat declared the church a National Monument of Catalonia. Its Romanesque classification, hillside setting and historic designation give Sant Pere a distinct place in the architectural and monument history of Ponts.

Carrer Major offers a different perspective on the architecture. Upper arcades supported by thick stone columns and round arches have been preserved there. Here, the focus is less on a single building than on the architectural elements themselves: columns support the arches and define the design of the arcades.

Religious art is also represented by the Retaule del Roser in Santa Maria de Ponts. This polychrome carved wooden altarpiece is dedicated to the Virgin of the Rosary and the mysteries of the Rosary. Its material and dedication create a different focus from the Romanesque church and the arcades. Those interested in sacred art will find, alongside architectural forms, a work with a specific religious significance.

Festive traditions in Ponts

Lo Ranxo takes place on Shrove Tuesday as a communal meal and is associated with the last day before Lent. The traditional recipe is prepared in 50 to 60 cauldrons, making around 12,000 portions. After cooking, Lo Ranxo is blessed before residents and visitors share the meal. The many cauldrons, the blessing and the communal meal combine culinary character with tradition. If you are planning your trip around Lo Ranxo, check the Shrove Tuesday dates for the year in question.

Organization is also one of the defining features of the Lo Roser de Ponts tradition. Four Majorales lead the festival and bear most of the organizational responsibility: two are unmarried and two are married. Their role gives the festival a clearly defined organizational structure.

The Caramelles were held continuously from 1999 to 2022, with the exception of two years affected by the pandemic. The Processó del Silenci revived the tradition of the Armats in Ponts on 8 April 2004. These two historical points of reference differ from Lo Ranxo, which recurs on Shrove Tuesday: they mark either a series of events held over a specific period or a particular revival.

Collections and archaeological heritage

The Museu Francesc Boncompte has a large collection of edged weapons and firearms from various periods. It also features vintage motorcycles, tools from various trades and old toys. The collection thus ranges from weapons to technology, crafts and toys, offering different ways to explore cultural history.

The Gravats de Mas de n'Olives archaeological site in Ponts is a different type of cultural heritage. It is protected as a BCIN archaeological zone; the designation was made on 25 June 1985. Whereas the museum’s collection is defined by its range of object groups, the site’s archaeological classification is its central feature.

Leisure by the Segre and at the whitewater course

Parc de la Roca del Call is a recreational area on the banks of the Segre River in Ponts. The Ponts whitewater course offers a different leisure option, with good conditions for fishing and adventure sports. This gives you two distinct options: relaxing by the river or activities associated with the course. Together with the architecture, festive traditions and collections, these provide several themes to guide your trip planning and choice of hotel in Ponts.
