Discover Riu De Cerdanya
Accommodation in Riu De Cerdanya
Riu de Cerdanya lies in Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park, at the foot of the Cadí and Moixeró mountains. Numerous hiking routes and trails can be accessed from Riu de Cerdanya. The town’s history and local festival traditions also shape a stay here. You can plan your trip around nature, architecture, or the celebrations for Sant Joan.
Hiking in Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park
The Ruta de l’Avetosa de Riu is a nature trail through a fir forest that leads to two monumental fir trees. Both have a circumference of more than four meters and are up to 30 meters tall. The trail connects the forest with a clearly defined destination: the two distinctive trees.
The route starts at Refugi del Serrat de les Esposes. From Riu, a five-kilometer track also leads toward Coll del Pendís to an access point in the area of the refuge. As conditions on the track may change, check its condition before your trip.
A long-distance hike on a different scale
Cavalls del Vent is a traverse between eight staffed mountain refuges in Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park. The route is marked in orange and is about 97 kilometers long; it passes through the mountainous area of the municipality of Riu de Cerdanya. It offers a long-distance hike between refuges, while the Ruta de l’Avetosa leads to two specific trees. This difference can help you choose a route based on the kind of experience you want.
Church, portal, and washhouse
Sant Joan de Riu de Pendís is an 18th-century church. Its rounded apse retains Romanesque forms. The church’s Baroque altar was one of two altars in Baixa Cerdanya to survive the destruction of 1936. The central voussoir of the portal of Sant Joan Baptista bears the date 1773.
Font de les Rentadores also combines a structure with a specific detail: the washhouse dates from the 19th century and has a fountain with five spouts decorated with sculpted heads. Along with the church and portal, it offers another point of interest if you are interested in the town’s architectural history.
Festa Major and Sant Joan traditions
The traditional Ball de les Rentadores is part of the Festa Major de Riu de Cerdanya. It is danced at the fountain in the village square. A group of young people from Riu revived the dance toward the end of the 20th century. If you would like to see it, check the festival program before your trip.
Around Midsummer’s Eve, a bonfire and a shared meal of coca and cava are part of the Festa Major. On the morning of June 24, a mass in honor of Sant Joan Baptista, Riu’s patron saint, is part of the festivities. Check the dates and program for your travel dates if you would like to plan your trip around the celebrations.
Traditional Sant Joan celebrations also include the Pujada a la Font: the walking route leads from the church to the village fountain, followed by a snack of chocolate, biscuits, anise liqueur, and muscatel wine. Details may vary.
