Sidamon: Archaeology, History and Routes
Accommodation in Sidamon
You can discover Sidamon through several themes: an archaeological site, historic buildings and routes for different ways of getting around. This lets you shape your plans around what interests you most—its long history of settlement, its architecture or a specific route.
Archaeology at Tossal de les Tenalles
The Iberian archaeological site of Tossal de les Tenalles is located within the municipality of Sidamon. The earliest traces of settlement date from the Late Bronze Age, the 9th to 8th centuries BC. The site then remained continuously inhabited until the 2nd century BC. Its history of settlement therefore spans several centuries.
The study of the site also has particular historical significance: the 1915 excavation was considered the first scientific archaeological intervention at an Ilergetes settlement. Tossal de les Tenalles thus connects the history of the place with the early archaeological study of an Ilergetes settlement.
Distinguishing routes by mode of transport
The Ruta de la Fita Alta starts in Sidamon. It is 3 kilometres long and takes about 55 minutes on foot. The stated walking time helps you estimate how long this route will take, while its length makes it easy to compare with the considerably longer cycling routes.
The Ruta de la Serra is a 20.1-kilometre circular cycling route that passes through Sidamon. The Ruta dels Canals de Regadiu has a different focus: this 40-kilometre driving route starts in Mollerussa and continues through Sidamon. It focuses on irrigated agriculture, nature and cultural heritage.
The three routes therefore offer different ways to experience the area: a walking route with a stated duration, a circular cycling route and a driving route with a thematic focus. When choosing, the key considerations are not only the route length but also the intended mode of transport and—for the Ruta dels Canals de Regadiu—the combination of agriculture, nature and cultural heritage.
Church and historic buildings
The original parish church of Sant Bartomeu de Sidamon is documented from the 12th century. It was built on the site of the former Castle of Sidamon and the original temple. The history of the parish church thus intersects here with the older building history of the castle and temple.
The Escoles Municipals school building represents a different chapter in the town’s history. It dates from 1921 and was designed by Ignasi de Vilallonga Casañes. Its construction date and architect give the building a clear historical context, distinct from that of the parish church, documented since medieval times.
Cal Miqueló was probably built between 1782 and 1785. Its distinctive architectural features include a side gallery with round arches and large stone surrounds around the main openings. Its approximate date and specific architectural details add another period to the history of Sidamon’s buildings.
La Pineda de Sidamon recreation area
La Pineda de Sidamon is about 300 metres outside the village, on the CamĂ de la Serra. This pine-planted recreation area is equipped for cooking and relaxation. Facilities include barbecue areas, running water and service amenities. If you plan to use the area, note that advance reservations are required.
With its archaeological site, buildings, routes and La Pineda, Sidamon offers several specific starting points for planning your trip. You can choose based on whether you want to explore the history of settlement, discover buildings from different periods, select a route by mode of transport or include a recreation area in your plans.
