Tàrrega: History, Architecture and Nature
Accommodation in Tàrrega
Tàrrega originated in the 11th century as a medieval town and vegueria centred around the castle in the valley of the Ondara River. This history provides a setting for a stay focused on museums, architecture and the town’s past. At the Museu Comarcal de l'Urgell, you can explore topics ranging from Iberian prehistory to the town’s art history from 1875 to 1965; modernist buildings and the history of its factories add to this picture. This gives you several themes to choose from, from medieval heritage to architecture and nature.
History at the Museu Comarcal
The Museu Comarcal de l'Urgell is housed in the former residence of the Perelló family, a town palace dating from the late 17th century. Its permanent exhibitions cover Iberian prehistory, medieval Tàrrega, the ceremonial rooms of Cal Perelló, and the town’s art history from 1875 to 1965. The scope therefore spans from prehistory to the second half of the 20th century, bringing different periods together in a historic building. The time periods and the ceremonial rooms themselves can both provide a starting point for your visit.
On the first Sunday of each month at 10:30 a.m., the museum offers a guided tour of the exhibition “Tragèdia al call. Tàrrega 1348” and the town’s Jewish Quarter. The exhibition presents and contextualises archaeological materials from the excavation sites at the Les Roquetes Jewish necropolis and from deposits in the Jewish Quarter that resulted from an attack. The tour thus combines a visit to the exhibition with the history of the neighbourhood; the monthly Sunday morning slot is a useful point of reference when planning your visit.
Modernist Architecture and Industrial History
The Ruta del modernisme takes you through Tàrrega to the town’s most notable modernist buildings, constructed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It focuses on a clearly defined architectural period. Casa Sobies was built between 1909 and 1910 and is considered an example of Arts and Crafts architecture. The Antiga Farinera Balcells is an example of modernist industrial architecture. The two buildings therefore illustrate distinct architectural categories: Arts and Crafts at Casa Sobies and industrial modernism at the former Farinera.
The J. Trepat factory, preserved as a factory complex, offers another perspective on industrial history. The first agricultural machines for threshing, mowing and binding were designed, manufactured and sold there. The site therefore represents not only a factory building, but also the development and manufacture of these machines. Together with the modernist examples, the factory broadens the picture of Tàrrega by highlighting the connections between architecture, design and production.
Green Spaces and Trails
Parc de Sant Eloi covers 17 hectares and features around 70 species of trees and shrubs. The park’s area and variety of woody plants describe two of its defining features: its size and the diversity of its planting. For outdoor activities, consider the nature trails in the municipality of Tàrrega. They are suitable for hiking and mountain biking (BTT), are low in difficulty and accessible to everyone. The park and the trails offer different highlights: Parc de Sant Eloi is notable for its size, trees and shrubs, while the trails are defined by the activities they offer and their low level of difficulty.
Visitor Centre and Performances
Mas de Colom – Casa Borges is an immersive, educational visitor centre in a former masia in Tàrrega. Its approach differs from the permanent exhibitions at the Museu Comarcal: here, the focus is on the immersive and educational nature of the visitor centre, while the museum covers a range of historical and art-historical topics. Alongside museums and architecture, this offers another way to explore Tàrrega.
FiraTàrrega presents performances at more than twenty indoor and open-air venues spread throughout the town. The venues differ both in their locations and in the mix of indoor and outdoor spaces. This offers a different cultural experience from visiting a museum or viewing individual buildings: performances take place at various locations across the town.
