Vilagrassa brings together historic buildings, routes, and seasonal natural attractions. If you are looking for a hotel in Vilagrassa, these highlights can help guide your choice of destination: the Church of Santa Maria reflects different architectural and historical layers, while the Camí de Sant Jaume and a route through grain fields offer different experiences. This lets you shape your trip around your interests without conflating the different places and routes.

Santa Maria: Different Periods of Construction

The Church of Santa Maria in Vilagrassa reflects several clearly distinct architectural and historical influences. Its late Romanesque portal dates from the 13th century, is associated with the Lleida school, and is decorated with biblical scenes. The Renaissance portico, dating from 1549, is a separate feature. The church also preserves burials from the 17th and 18th centuries. The portal and portico therefore represent different architectural elements and periods. The bell tower adds another layer to the building’s history: it is Romanesque with Gothic influences, leans 80 centimeters to the south, and was built in two phases.

Chapels and Historic Houses

The Ermita del Roser is a 16th-century chapel that was restored in the early 1990s and remains a cultural and heritage landmark in Vilagrassa. Its three-bay structure, in the Gothic-Renaissance style, has ribbed vaults and stone vault caps. The Capella del Mas de l'Estadella features different architectural forms and a different state of preservation: this 16th-century Renaissance chapel is dedicated to the Mare de Déu del Roser and has a rectangular floor plan. Its barrel vault with lunettes has partly collapsed, and the chapel is in urgent need of intervention.

The historic houses also display a range of details. Cal Botes is a Renaissance manor house; it is dated by the year 1582, engraved on the tympanum of the main window. Cal Fèlix dates from the second half of the 16th century and retains a moulded window and a shallow basket-handle arch portal. A house in the historic center has a voussoired portal on the ground floor, typical of the 16th and 17th centuries. The Passatge de Lluís Companys also runs through the house, with a slightly pointed round arch.

Water, Grain, and Architectural Forms

The restored Pou de la Plaça del Filador is a covered well from the early modern period, used to store and supply water. The silos of “lo sitjar” show a different kind of storage: they were used to store grain in the 17th and 18th centuries. The comparison highlights their different functions—water in one case, grain in the other. The Torre del Pagès, also known as the Torre del Governador, is a group of several buildings arranged around a courtyard. The main building consists of three sections, including a tower-like central section and an upper-floor arcaded gallery.

The Fita de Montalbà stands on the route to the Pont del Teto of the Canal d'Urgell. This stone marker preserves historic territorial inscriptions, including “MONTALBA” and “TERME DEL DUCH DE SESSA,” as well as a patriarchal cross. It is also in poor condition. Both the inscription and its state of preservation are features of this historic marker.

Routes and Seasonal Nature

A section of the Camí de Sant Jaume passes through Vilagrassa and Anglesola and continues toward Lleida. A 2014 route description also covers the Anglesola–Vilagrassa stretch through grain fields. It mentions corn buntings, partridges, and quail, but especially Montagu’s harrier; birdwatching depends on the season. Check current route information before planning your trip.

Events with Different Highlights

The Festa de Sant Roc on August 16, 2027, includes an Aplec at the chapel of the Mare de Déu del Roser and the traditional Cossos de Sant Roc race through the town center. The Fira de l'Ametlla is dedicated to almonds. It reflects the long tradition of almond growing as a complementary crop in Vilagrassa’s family farming. Dates and programs may change; check the latest event information when making specific plans.
