Vilalba dels Arcs: Medieval Traces and Culture
Accommodation in Vilalba dels Arcs
Vilalba dels Arcs reveals several layers of history: numerous medieval remains have been preserved in the historic centre, while churches, archaeological sites and art in the town centre offer further ways to explore its past. Recurring festivals and routes also connect the town with specific themes. When planning your trip, consider whether architectural history, local traditions, or exploring on foot and by bike should be your focus.
Medieval Traces and Architectural History
Visible remains of the medieval town walls have been preserved along the edge of the old town. Perxe del Bassot, at the end of Carrer de Baix, consists of two arches; its inner round arch served as a gate. The idea that the structure may have served as an entrance to the former town is one possible interpretation. The olive oil mill Molà d’oli al Bassot – Molà de Granyena preserves other evidence of the town’s history: the tower of a beam-and-weight olive press, millstones, and basins and containers for oil.
The parish church of Sant Llorenç was built in several phases from around 1535 to 1744. Its present bell tower is 42.5 metres high, consists of four sections and features Corinthian pilasters. Another landmark in the history of the town’s architecture is the Baroque Capella de la Mare de Déu dels Dolors: construction began in 1707; in 1718, the chapel had not yet been consecrated.
The history of Turó del Calvari reaches further back still. The archaeological site was in use from the last quarter of the 7th century BC to the first half of the 6th century BC. Based on its structure and the finds, it is interpreted as a building that was probably used for ritual purposes. This cautious interpretation is part of the town’s history, as is the dating of the site.
Art, Places of Remembrance and Distinctive Architecture
The VilaRt exhibition features iron sculptures spread throughout the town centre. Their subjects relate to their location, historical moments, professions or particular seasons. The works therefore stand not only on their own, but also reflect different themes connected with the town.
At the Ermita de Sant Pau, a small chapel is combined with an unusual architectural form: it is troglodytic, has a rectangular floor plan and its roof is made of the natural rock. Els Barrancs offers a different way of presenting history. There, stone sections of parapet have been restored and the historic setting recreated with sandbags. These were used to protect the fighters and to shoot from a commanding position.
Mirador del Bassot, in the municipality of Vilalba dels Arcs, is a signposted site associated with the Battle of the Ebro. Here, visitors can learn about the changing advances and retreats, as well as the fighting over positions. The historic centre also has a permanent exhibition about the Terç de Requetès de la Mare de Déu de Montserrat.
Festivals with Set Dates in the Calendar
La PassiĂł de Vilalba is performed on Maundy Thursday and Holy Saturday in twelve participatory scenes staged in the streets and squares of the historic town centre. The annual pilgrimage to Santa Maria Magdalena de BerrĂşs takes place on the first Saturday after Easter. It includes a 50-kilometre round trip from Vilalba dels Arcs.
Tasta Vilalba is an event held on the second weekend of June, with local products at its heart. These include the wineries, the olive oil mill and the municipality’s cherry producers. The programme features product tastings and visits to producers’ premises. If you would like to plan your stay around one of these events, check the dates in the programme for the relevant year; dates around Easter depend on when Easter falls.
Routes and Landscape
The Arte al Raso route starts in Vilalba dels Arcs and covers 7.55 kilometres on foot or by bike. It brings together nature, heritage and outdoor art. These three themes give the route its distinctive focus; its length also helps you factor the outing into your travel plans.
Another way to combine heritage with a route is the signposted Route of the 24 Waterwheels. Many of the waterwheels of Vilalba dels Arcs can be visited near the main path. In Vall dels Prats, the scenic first section runs from below the washhouses to the confluence with Barranc de Vallplana. When planning, you can choose between a route combining nature, heritage and art, the waterwheels, or a clearly defined stretch of landscape.
