Discover Viliella
Accommodation in Viliella
Viliella lies on the right-hand side of the Vall de la Llosa, on a slope formed by the terminal moraine of a former glacier. The parish church of Sant Sebastià and Viliella Castle, or the rock of Viliella, are two specific points of reference for the town’s history. Two different routes also start in Viliella: a stage of the Camà dels Bons Homes and the “Itinerari conscient 8”. When planning your trip, you can therefore connect the landscape, history and hiking without conflating the routes or historical topics.
Location and Landscape of Viliella
The names of the waterways also help to orient you in the area: the Torrent de Viliella flows into the Riu de la Llosa from the right. Together with Viliella’s location on the right-hand side of the Vall de la Llosa, this gives two distinct geographical relationships: the town’s position in relation to the valley, and one watercourse flowing into another. A terminal moraine is material deposited by a glacier at its end; here, the moraine forms the slope of Viliella. For travellers interested in landforms, this connects a specific location with its geological formation. The valley, torrent, river and slope are distinct points of reference, not interchangeable names.
Church and Medieval Local History
Viliella’s parish church is called Sant SebastiĂ and was formerly known as Sant MartĂ. In the 10th century, it belonged to Ripoll Monastery. The change from Sant MartĂ to Sant SebastiĂ is part of the church’s history of names; its connection to the monastery also places it in an early historical period. Sant SebastiĂ is a small site of historical and cultural interest. Viliella Castle, or the rock of Viliella, also dates back to the town’s medieval history: it was already in existence in the 13th century. In 1305, the castle or rock was owned by Arnau Despuig; in 1355, it was owned by Jaume Cadell. The two dates mark different points in time. You can therefore consider the church’s historical connection and the ownership details of the castle or rock as two separate topics in the town’s history.
Hiking Routes with Different Highlights
The sixth stage of the CamĂ dels Bons Homes runs from Viliella to Porta, is 23.5 km long and has a stated duration of 6 hr 30 min. Both the distance and the time are therefore available to help you plan this stage. After 1.4 km from Sant SebastiĂ Church, the route reaches the GR 107 and then continues north. This section offers a specific point of reference: starting at the church, joining the GR 107 and then heading north. Mountain conditions can change with the seasons; check them before your hike. Trail conditions and signage may also change, so it is advisable to check those before setting out too.
Another route idea also starts in Viliella: the “Itinerari conscient 8: L’à nima del granit: Meditació amb els elements de la natura”. The title refers to granite and a meditation with the elements of nature. By comparison, the Camà dels Bons Homes stage can be described in terms of its length, duration and direction; the starting point and title identify the Itinerari conscient 8. This lets you choose between a stage with specific figures and a nature-focused route idea.
