Tórtoles: Collegiate Church and Medieval Townscape
Accommodation in Tórtoles
Tórtoles lies in the Corneja Valley at an altitude of 1,079 metres. Its medieval character is reflected in half-timbered buildings, arcades and façades with varied masonry; the street plan combines rectangular and radial layouts. The streets open onto an arcade-lined square, beside which stand the fortress, the jurisdictional column and a monumental church. The interplay of façades, street layout and prominent buildings shapes the character of the town. The historic-artistic ensemble was declared by Royal Decree 1646/1983 of 4 May 1983.
The Collegiate Church of San Martín de Tours
The Iglesia Colegiata San Martín de Tours was declared a national historic-artistic monument on 3 June 1931. Construction began in the first half of the 15th century; the church is Gothic in style. Inside, a single large nave defines the space. Pointed arches divide it into five bays, giving the architecture a clear sequence. The main chapel contains a Baroque altarpiece dated 1688. Ten painted panels depict episodes from the life of Saint Martin of Tours. Thus, the church's Gothic beginnings and the much later date of the altarpiece stand as two distinct historical reference points.
Fortress, Well and Regional History
The Castillo Fortaleza Bonilla de la Sierra fortress appears to date from the 12th century. From the 14th century onward, it underwent extensive alterations and maintenance. The date of the Pozo de Santa Bárbara is also uncertain: it was probably built between the 12th and 13th centuries to supply the population with water. The two buildings convey different aspects of the town's history: the fortress represents a long history of construction and use, while the well is associated with supplying the population.
The Molino de Chuy mill is also part of the historic surroundings, although it is not in the town centre. It is located in Ribera del Corneja, a hamlet belonging to Bonilla, by the Río Corneja and the Chuy Bridge, built in 1411. The historic-artistic ensemble is also associated with grain cultivation, grain trading and breadmaking in mills along the Río Corneja. This connection describes the area's historic economy; it does not imply that there is a bakery today or that a mill is currently operating.
Night-time Observations and Trails
Cruz del Risco is a place where constellations and shooting stars can be observed. Darkness and visibility are important, and both depend on the weather. For a different nocturnal perspective, take a walk through the area known as “traspalacio”: it evokes the way of life during the bishops' stays at the castle-palace. Thus, observing the sky and imagining life at the castle offer two distinct experiences.
For hiking enthusiasts, a route to Bonilla de la Sierra is described, starting in Mesegar de Corneja. It follows the river to the medieval Chuy Bridge and then continues along the path towards Bonilla. The sequence of river, bridge and onward path gives the route a clear course; no walking time or level of difficulty is specified.
The Los Negros Procession
The Los Negros Procession was revived in the 1980s and was still active as of 2 April 2026. The procession described for 2026 begins at midnight at the Iglesia Colegiata San Martín de Tours. Three penitents dressed in black take part, carrying a bell, a turuta and a drum. With its late-night start and the instruments mentioned, this tradition differs from the town's architectural landmarks; it adds a religious custom to the picture of Tórtoles.
