Casavieja lies on the southern slope of the eastern Gredos massif. When choosing a hotel in Casavieja, you can match the purpose of your trip with the things the town has to offer: hiking and cycling routes, a permanent trail-running centre, festival traditions, and the Church of San Juan Bautista all shape different aspects of a stay. Whether you want to focus on sport, local customs, or both, there are specific points to help you plan your trip. For seasonal events and routes, check the information for your travel dates.

Hiking, Cycling and Trail Running

The municipality, in collaboration with CD Calamochos, presents hiking and cycling routes through Casavieja and neighbouring municipalities. The routes on offer may change; check the route information relevant to your visit. A short route marked in green at the trail-running centre is described as suitable for beginners. It starts and finishes at the Fuente Helecha nature area. Markings, difficulty ratings, and the starting point may change.

The permanent trail-running centre in the countryside is recognised and accredited by the RFEA. Check the centre’s current status before your trip as well. When planning sporting activities, it is worth distinguishing between the short route and the competitions: the Calamochos Bike Race is presented with two courses, while Trail Calamochos includes a half marathon and a cross-country race. Course and event details may change. If one of these formats is a deciding factor for your stay, check the latest information in advance.

Masks, Festivals and Music

The Zarramaches masquerade takes place in Casavieja every year on February 3 and is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural, or Asset of Cultural Interest. The specific visitor programme may vary. During the traditional procession, the two festival figures, portrayed by the Quintos, walk from the town hall along the main streets to the church at the entrance to the town. There, they attend Mass and process around the church; the newer settlements at higher elevations are not visited.

Other annual dates also give local life its own rhythm. The festival in honour of Saint Bartholomew takes place every year on August 24. It includes a solemn Mass at the parish church of San Juan Bautista, followed by a procession through the streets. Carnival features five days of dancing led by the Quintos, as well as three fancy-dress parades. If you want to plan your trip around one of these dates, check the specific programme for that year.

In the run-up to Christmas, the folkloric groups of the Pastores walk through the streets every weekend from the first weekend of December until the Saturday before Christmas. They sing Rondas and Christmas carols. The traditional Zambombada also takes place on the Saturday before Christmas. As this date depends on the calendar, it is a good idea to check the information for the relevant travel year. Casavieja is also one of the seven municipalities in Mascarávila, an annual cultural project that moves between locations and showcases local dances, music, and masquerades.

More to Help Plan Your Stay

The Church of San Juan Bautista has a four-storey tower. For a different focus when planning your day, visit the Fuente Helecha nature area: the short trail-running route starts and finishes there, and the municipal swimming pool is also located there, next to the campsite. The pool has facilities for adults and children. Opening dates, operating hours, and prices may change; check this information if you are planning a visit.

This makes it easy to tailor a stay in Casavieja to your interests: the short green route is described as suitable for beginners, while the competitions mentioned include a half marathon, a cross-country race, or two courses. Festival dates, in turn, offer a cultural connection for your trip planning, but the programme for the relevant year should be checked. These differences can help you shape your stay around outdoor activities, local customs, or a combination of both.
