Discover El Barraco: Camino, Churches and Pilgrimages
Accommodation in El Barraco
Those choosing El Barraco as an overnight destination can explore its clear links to pilgrimage, recurring religious traditions, historic buildings, and nature. These themes help you organize the purpose of your trip: stages and pilgrimages offer points of reference throughout the year, while churches, the bridge, and the Plaza de Toros bring the town’s history to life through specific buildings.
El Barraco is the 20th and 21st stages of the Camino de Santiago del Sureste, also known as the Camino de Alicante a Santiago. When looking for stage information or checking your travel plans, also take the alternative route name into account. Check the route details before departure.
The Camino and Religious Traditions
Several customs and pilgrimages are central to the yearly calendar. For Las Candelas, the local Quintos sing songs to the Virgen de la Piedad each year. On Good Friday, stone crosses in El Barraco mark the Via Crucis procession, during which the town’s patron saint is carried to Mount Tres Cruces. The pilgrimage to San Marcos Evangelista takes place on the Sunday after April 25. The saint is carried from the parish church to the Ermita de San Marcos, two kilometers away, where a Mass is celebrated in his honor. Another annual pilgrimage is dedicated to San Cristóbal, the patron saint of motorists; it takes place on the Sunday after July 10. If you would like to include one of these traditions in your travel plans, check the date for the year you plan to travel.
Buildings and Local History
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de El Barraco was built in the early 16th century. Its bell tower offers panoramic views of the town. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Piedad is built of ashlar stone and has a single rectangular nave. The two religious buildings have different features: the church is notable for its construction date and tower views, while the hermitage is described by its building material and floor plan.
The Puente de Visillo adds a river crossing to this architectural history. The single-arch bridge in the Romanesque style was built in the first half of the 17th century to cross the Gaznata River. The Plaza de Toros de El Barraco also has an exact date: it was inaugurated on September 15, 1930, during the Fiestas in honor of the SantĂsimo Cristo de Gracia. The bridge’s purpose and the occasion for inaugurating the bullring thus represent two different historical connections.
Landscape and Events
The municipality of El Barraco also includes the Embalse del Burguillo and the Valle de Iruelas. If you want to understand the town as a municipality, rather than only through its individual buildings, these two natural landmarks are also part of the picture.
The Museo de la naturaleza Valle del Alberche accepts reservations for interpretive routes for groups of ten or more. Events take place at the Mirador AstronĂłmico in El Barraco and at the Museo de la Naturaleza according to a monthly program or by request. The arrangements differ: routes have a minimum group size, while events depend on the program or a request. If you would like to include an event in your stay, check the monthly program or make a specific inquiry.
